You've got your numbers a little skewed here...more like $5k break for Minnesotans. Being a MN res hoping to get in to UW I wish you were right.

http://www.law.wisc.edu/prospective/tui ... costs.html

I think this difference in tuition for residents illustrates why UMN is more freehanded with scholarship money than UW. The kids who pay sticker (regardless of residency) pay for those scholarships. UW on the other hand likes to accept a lot of Wisconsinites (past 3 classes matriculated ~60%) so they have a smaller pool of money for merit scholarships.
My bad, that wasn't clear: both "relative scholarship" numbers I threw out in that post were over three years (e.g., the $75K at Illinois).

And you might have a good point about the applicant pools influencing the scholarship availability. I guess I never thought about it quite that way -- we keep attracting all these Wisconsin residents (low tuition, best school in the state, no bar exam=best 3L ever, etc.), and that might be the reason we can't afford to attract some of the non-Wisconsin residents. Good thought.

Dick Dastardly wrote:Oh, one more thing: other than the URM fellowships (which are really generous, and through a separate endowment), Wisconsin does not have a tremendous amount of financial aid money to throw around. I know of a few people with solid scholarships, so it does happen, but it isn't like Illinois, where they have hundreds of thousands of dollars in a separate fund, solely for the sake of attracting candidates (and/or making candidates up).

Sorry, Illinois people, I couldn't pass up that joke. Nothing personal.

Anyway, if you are URM, you might hit a jackpot here. If you're in-state, good luck finding a better deal (in-state tuition is basically a $75K scholarship at Illinois)...and you still might be one of the lucky ones to get a scholarship on top of it. Minnesotans get the equivalent of a $15K scholarship just because of tuition reciprocity. But if you are out-of-state and your decision is going to be based heavily upon financial aid, then you might have more luck at some of the peerish schools that have bigger scholarship endowments. Just trying to be honest, from what I've seen.
This has been my basic insight from past cycles. I know there were strong candidates that were surprised that they weren't being offered more in terms of financial incentive to attend. It probably kept them away. I would be interested in knowing why out-of-state applicants from the East Coast or West Coast are interested in attending the school. Unless they have a significant other moving, what are their deciding factors for choosing Madison?

I applied Early Decison, then was deferred to the regular decision and I still haven't heard anything.

+1 on the waitlist email. Really not happy. Madison was and is a top choice for me. Took an acceptance for granted after getting into Virginia, Berkeley, and Minnesota.

I am shocked to see a lot of these waitlists. I know UW is known for the practice, but I don't understand them turning away most of these numbers, especially considering how far they are (well some, anyways) over the medians. Still UR since about a decade ago, expecting I'll soon be joining the WL club

They seem to believe that OOS students with competitive numbers could not possibly want to leave their home states to live in Wisconsin.

I sat in complete for like, 2 1/2 weeks before I went under review.

Nah - You were just auto-admit. Your admittance didn't surprise me.

In-state, UW grad AND your numbers = you for sure being accepted. :D

Apparently that logic only works as long as your numbers aren't much better than hers then.
