This scares me, especially since I went to UG elsewhere. I'm rolling the dice, I guess, and hoping employers focus on my cover letter and care about the ties that I do have to the South.

Anyways. I'm going Friday. What do we wear? Business casual or casual?

I'll be there Friday too. I think it's business casual, but I don't think it's that strict.

As far as ties, I don't have many to the area. My Uncle and his family have lived in Greensboro and I've visited the area numerous times over the years. My plan is to emphasize the ties I do have, explain that my parents and sister are planning on moving to NC in the next few years (this is true), and network like crazy. I am originally from Florida, and Wake has a good reputation there (I also have ties to the legal community in South Florida)- so that's my back up plan. As long as you are diligent and have good explanations for relocation and motivation for working where you choose to apply (or going back home), I think it should be okay. It will be harder though.

I'll probably wear some work khakis and a button down on Friday, but that's what I wear every day.

to clarify: my response was for the person that wanted to practice in new jersey (where they are from). if u want to stay in the south/n.c., you should be fine! the key is to pick a school in the region where u think u want to practice (unless u get into harvard/yale/stanford, the likes).
posting at 3am after st. patty's is not the brightest idea, so lmk if this doesn't make sense:)

I understand about having ties and how Wake has more of a reputation in the South versus northeast. For me, tuition at Wake will be the same or less than at New Jersey's schools (Rutgers and Seton Hall) both of which sort of suck. Plus the cost of living will be significantly less. I think I will have a much better experience at Wake than if I stay in NJ. And ultimately, I have a bunch of ties that should help me get started back here after graduation. Still waiting to hear from some other schools, but I'm pretty much settled on Wake.

Outside of T14, ranking becomes a lot less important than region in securing gainful employment. For example, going to Cardozo/Brooklyn (ranked in the 50s and 60s) would better position someone for NYC employment than W&M (ranked 35), despite the fact that W&M has way more lay prestige and more general portability. Maybe talk to career services at Wake/talk to prospective employers of interest? Ur reasoning makes sense. Just make sure that you would be okay working in NC if job options back in NJ don't pan out. Good luck!

I agree with you about quality of life- just substitute fl for nj. I hope to see you in August!

Yeah I suppose the fact that I would be fine if I had to stay in NC is important. I just really see myself being pretty miserable if I had to spend 3 years commuting to Newark, NJ (which really is an aweful place). I really want law school to force me to grow as a person, and I don't know how much living at or very close to home will get me out of my comfort zone. Its a big decision but I don't see myself regretting it (unless I can't get a job haha).

Is Wake planning on giving out anymore scholarships? I only ask because I have looming deadlines and wanted to know whether is was worth it to keep Wake on my list. (Can't really afford sticker.)

They've been telling people that they've currently offered all of their scholarships funds, so I definitely wouldn't count on it. That's not to say that there won't be more scholarship money, but it's unlikely unless a lot of people who have been offered money turn it down.

given wake's yield, i suspect at least 30 people will turn down money. however, that by no means guarantees that admissions will be inclined to fund other scholarships. also, i'm thinking my speeding tickets/hov violation might actually harm my chances of acceptance. i didn't have a suspended license or anything criminal, but i got an awfully large number of tickets in an awfully short period of time...anyone else in a similar situation? i never had to attach a character & fitness addendum before i applied to wake, so no clue how admissions will react

The fact that a few people turn down scholarships actually won't increase the scholarship pool since the school over-offers with scholarships (i.e. offers more than it expects to be accepted). The school expects quite a few people to turn down scholarships, and, when they do, nothing really happens other than that the admissions people breath a huge sigh of relief that they didn't over-enroll like they did last year (when more people accepted than expected). The only way people turning down scholarships would likely increase this year's scholarships would be if way more people turned down offers than expected, and the school ended up having to "recruit" new students with scholarship-type stats.

As for the traffic violations, it's probably no big deal for admission to Wake. Most people I know had at least a traffic ticket or two, and it didn't affect them.

this is absurd. sure, make other plans if u want, but ride the waitlist if wake is actually ur first choice. no offense, but i'm highly skeptical as to the credibility of your sources. maybe this is a prank and u r hoping ppl will withdraw in order to up ur chances of getting off the wl, but if so: execution fail.

Seems cruel to give people that kind of false hope! I wish we could sell/trade law school acceptances on a black market...

Don't start worrying until after the first deposit deadlines (scholarship/non-scholarship). I was accepted off the waitlist in 2009 two days after the first deadline. Don't withdraw - the school is worth the wait.

So, this might be a stupid question, but I'm planning to be at the March 23 ASW. Is it really only 9-2? Seems a bit light for a visit 'weekend'. I was just at Ohio State and there was a legit 12-5 and 8-1 on Fri/Sat. Any thoughts?

I think it's technically called an "accepted student day" so... there's that.
