They only offer initial scholarships for the first year, then they have 1ls apply for scholarships during first semester and they are awarded based on merrit. You apply for scholarships each year and it is competitive.

Did you receive a letter or email with the scholarship offer?

So I just paid my seat deposit and went to check my email for confirmation and then realized I got an email for a $7,000 scholarship. Nice/unexpected surprise. I thought they were done giving out scholarships. :)

I also just got an email from American for 20k/1st year. However, I sent an email to them last week withdrawing from the school.

Also got that same email! Obviously this has to do with the first deadline already having passed. They're redistributing the scholly money. And of course now they've made my decision even more difficult...

Correction, I should have said first deadline for ppl with schollys. It was April 1. Deadline for everyone else is April 15, which still applies for those of us who got the scholly email yesterday.

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying. I was familiar with the April 15th date for deposits.

Withdrew last night - good luck to those of you who haven't heard anything or who are on the waitlist. Don't give up!

Got the $20k, as well. Still way too expensive, particularly since it is not renewable.

Seeing as there was a deposit deadline on the 1st, any movement for those on the waitlist?

after sending a LOCI via mail, i received an email confirming that it has been received as well as stating the following:

"Please note, the best way to indicate your continued interest to the Committee on Admissions is via monthly e-mailed statements, which can be sent to me. WCL has gone green, so we ask that all statements are sent electronically and not via mail or fax."

Waitlisted on 2/10. Riding the storm out.

Judging by LSN-they extended 15 offers off the WL last year and only 6 the year before that.

I'm not sure if they are hopeful numbers at all.

Actually, I think they are hopeful numbers. If the small sampling of people on LSN got 15 offers off the waitlist, that means there were perhaps, what, 100 altogether (speculating)? That's a lot. Keep in mind that while they may have hundreds of people on the WL, only a small portion of them are sending LOCIs, calling the office, and trying actively to get in.

Getting in off a WL is always a long shot, but I think there's reason to hope in this particular case. Tons of people who were accepted are going to turn down AU at the last minute, because it's a super-expensive school that gives out little aid and is hurting for job placement in the poor economy.

ya that mentality is really false.
look at LSN to see the number of people who got off the waitlist. there's over 50.
that's a small percentage of the total number of people actually did.

Are you sure you aren't counting "Accepted/W" as a waitlisted applicant who enrolled? That W does not stand for waitlist on LSN, it stands for Withdrawn. Those are applicants who were initially accepted and withdrew.

Not to paint a grim picture for wai listed applicants, but the assertion of 15 applicants above is partially correct. Please see this data: http://american.lawschoolnumbers.com/ap ... =6&type=jd (you might need to copy and paste)

Note, that 14 people self reported during lat year's cycle that they were wait listed and eventually accepted. Please also note that of those 14 people ten withdrew their applications, two self reported attending the school, and two are unknown. It is possible that they had a small amount of spots and cycled through their waitlist to fill them. Estimates of 100 people getting in off the wait list seem a bit far reaching (that's really high for an incoming class of 350 day and 90 night). I do think that anything is imossible though, and I do not pretend to be an authority on the subject of wait lists. Just offering some observation.

On a related note, I paid my deposit yesterday and plan to attend. I look forward to meeting others on here who are doing the same. I wish those of you on the wait list and place AU as a top choice school the best of luck. It is my sincerest hope that I get to sit among you as classmates next fall.

Yes, that's a good point. They may have cycled through 14 people to fill just 2-3 spots. But the fact remains, 14 people reported being GIVEN THE CHANCE to enroll off the waitlist, and that's all jessedvhs is looking for; a chance. And the 14 are just the ones we know of from LSN, which is a small sample. The total number of people given the chance was obviously higher than 14. One hundred may have been an exaggeration (apologies), but even if was just 50, that's enough to create some modest hope.

This is just way too much money and absolutely no leniency. I can see why people are hating on it as a school now - it has the ivy league attitude but not the credentials.

yeah this isn't true, at least for one time merit scholarships

Going off of 2010-11 numbers, there were 96 total WL'ed applicants that did not withdraw--that figure nearly identical to 2011-12. 14 reported that they were offered a slot and one reported a reject.

Remaining modest, I would at least increase that number to 35-40 for admission and up the total WL'ed to at least 125.

Made this assumption from:
LSN is a great resource and has indeed gained popularity each year, but it still is kind of lean with non-trad (only 8 of us currently for this cycle for American) and URM applicants. Furthermore, American is a school that pools from the working professionals in DC-MD-VA (especially for Pt) and the majority most likely do not care to fill out LSN profiles or know what the f**ck that is for that matter.

Also, factoring in larger incoming class at AU, along with the folks that did not go back to update their profiles once they were offered or denied admission, I am going to take a stab that the number that got an offer off of the WL is fairly solid, around 22-25%.

In other words, I'm throwing darts here and need something to give me hope.

Accepted at the end of January, just withdrew today. This school is simply too expensive. Seriously good luck to all of you still waiting. I hope you have some great plan to offset that prohibitive tuition though!
