Not counting on it, just hoping for it. I'd love for UH to make this a tough decision for me. :D

I got a call this week telling me they were sending a follow-up letter to my acceptance (off the WL) letter. I asked if it was regarding scholarship and they said yes. I had already sent an email withdrawing my application, but followed up stating that I had not been expecting the second letter and asking that they hold off on my withdrawal until I had time to review it, which they were happy to do. Hoping to find the letter when I get home tonight...

I had thought my cycle was done; Mrs Bvest and I are going to be in Dallas for a conference next weekend and are planning to look at houses while there. Depending on the contents, those plans may change.

I remember a few pages ago someone being held WL was a potential yield-protect. Was that you?

Yes (or so I suspected; Mrs. Bvest didn't think so). And it was admittedly dumb of me to take action without knowing if there was $$$, but I anticipated there was not. I've felt good about my handling of every app except UH.

BTW, when I asked whether the follow up letter was re scholarships I was told yes, but that they couldn't disclose any more over the phone, which is why I'm waiting for details.

They just called to offer a 5k scholly. They are mailing/emailing details. I think they said it was a merit scholly, so we'll see.

Congrats on the scholarship- I'm glad I was proven wrong. Are you going to go to UH?

I haven't decided yet. Right now its either Houston or Tulane, both with small scholly's. I want to be able to practice in Texas, so both would let me do that, but Tulane opens up other doors as well. It's also alot more expensive. I hope to choose between the two sometime in the next week.

Also, I'm on the WL at SMU, so we'll see how that plays out later as well. I'm ready to be done with all of this, haha.

Finally got the letter (which they couldn't discuss last week on the phone... I'm guessing because it hadn't been written at that point)... $5k with stips and in-state tuition. Considering that I'm a resident (and they did eventually figure that out in April), I was kind of counting on the latter part of the offer to begin with.

Mulling it over, but still leaning toward SMU with >$20k and no stips.

Kind of crazy that they're giving stingy offers to regularly admitted people and then scholarships in the same amount off the WL. :|

(no offense to the WL, I was WL last cycle and would've LOVED to be admitted with a scholly so CONGRATS)

Or no scholarship to students admitted back in December but then giving scholarships to WL admits. This plus going out of their way to deliberately lie about tuition not increasing is less than encouraging.

Gotta love the entitlement...

Anywho, gonna try to head to NOLA next week and try and a get a better feel for Tulane. Barring a pseudo-spiritual experience, I'll probably start making plans to attend UH in the fall.

I would argue that entitlement is assuming you've been "yield protected" because you're just so awesome that you transcend normal applicants and the school has to protect itself from the inevitable disappointment when you spurn their offer

Btw I wasn't talking about myself with the scholarship thing, just two other (who I presume where) autoadmits I know who deposited quickly and never got anything. But I get it, UH is probably having a hard time filling a class like a lot of its peers and feels the need to dangle some carrots to people who haven't made a deposit yet. Doesn't mean that doesn't make me a little disillusioned with the whole process though. Then again I hear that law school shatters a lot of illusions so might as well get a head start on that. :D

Also, I think the lying is a lot worse than the scholarship distribution tactics. That was terrible, imo.

That was me... And yes, I am a special snowflake. But there's something to be said for being the kind of snowflake they realize late in the process they need more of.

The "no tuition increase" thing is pretty goofy. I assume they're also upping the total number of credits required for graduation by 1. (Although, if not, then it's not an increase at all, just frontloads things a little more).

Sorry? Didn't realize this was a thread to post your disappointment in other people's offers. At least you had that nice little tiny-text disclaimer...

Jaytray: I definitely wasn't YP'd. Believe it or not, UH is probably the best option available to me at this point for several reasons. FYI.

mtyler & jaytray: Who any school decides to give any sort of money to at this stage of the game is completely arbitrary. I just think think the whole "What?! They gave you money?!" attitude sucks. Yeah- I can sympathize. It's happened to me this cycle too.

Anyways, that is entirely too much bickering for today. Stupid TLS, haha. You guys planning on doing UH for sure?

I was not at all saying "What?! They gave you money?!" I am not "disappointed" in anyones offers, I congratulated them.
UH is known for being notoriously stingy with anyone they accept, so yes, for them to give the same amount of money to WL who weren't initially accepted is new for them. They definitely didn't do that at all last cycle and most likely sparingly in the past.

Since they are still giving out money for WL. Those who are not happy with their scholarships should try again to negotatiate for more.

Just throwing this out there, and I have no idea how many of you are actually presently located in Houston, but would anyone be interested in meeting up at midtown or elsewhere for drinks one night?

In! I'll probably be there in the next few weeks at some point but not sure when yet. I'm planning on actually moving around the last week in July. :P

Yeah- If I'm in town, I would definitely try to go. I'm guessing I'll be running back and forth between Houston and Austin alot in the next month or so.

Awesome, lets shoot for mid-June, give people a chance to finish finals, move, and what not.

Anyone else from the Houston area have any input on where to go?
