For those trying to choose between SMU and UH I compiled some numbers from the new 2011 employment data released from http://placementsummary.abaquestionnaire.org/ All percentages are rounded up. Feel free to check my math but for the most part I think it is accurate.

UH
Total employment: 92%
Total employment minus temporary employment: 90%
Total employment minus temporary employment & 90% of business (mostly retail gigs etc.): 71%
Firm employment minus temporary employment: 53%
Firm employment minus temporary employment & small firms (solos and 2-10): 31%
Biglaw employment (firms with 50+ attorneys): 17%
Government & public interest employment minus temporary work: 14%
Academia minus temporary work: 1%

SMU
Total employment: 87%
Total employment minus temporary employment: 79%
Total employment minus temporary employment & 90% of business (mostly retail gigs etc.): 65%
Firm employment minus temporary employment: 53%
Firm employment minus temporary employment & small firms (solos and 2-10): 31%
Biglaw employment (firms with 50+ attorneys): 19%
Government & public interest employment minus temporary work: 10%
Academia minus temporary work: <1%

Edit: This is for the class of 2010.

What are your stats? (if you don't mind)

At least its not an outright deny. I've already heard of a ton of people withdrawing, so wait it out if you really want to go?

Big splitter (High -- very high -- LSAT; low -- very low -- GPA) but will turn 40 during law school, so I've got a lot of professional experience

Without money I'll be going to SMU over UH, so I'm not likely to wait it out.

ETA: Mrs BVest reminds me that I also applied late, literally. Like a dumbass, I used US News to create my spreadsheet of where to apply and failed to doublecheck deadlines. US News had UH listed as April 1 so I missed the Feb 15 deadline. Not by much, but I did.

Ah, gotcha. Are you switching careers or just enhancing the one you have? Just curious

Switching... but it's more of a logical progression. I've been drafting legislation for some time now.

I'm not sure how fast UH moves, but with the deadline for depositing having just passed this week, I would think there are spots opening up (like mine) for all the wait listers. It may be in an undesirable part of town, but as a native Houstonian I can tell you that the school is very respected in town. Hopefully you are all used to unbearable humidity though lol

From Wikipedia: "Yield protection is an alleged admissions practice where a university or academic institution rejects or wait-lists highly qualified students on the grounds that such students are bound to be accepted by more prestigious universities or programs.[citation needed] However, alternate theories regard the yield protection as a myth propagated by college students who failed to gain admission to elite universities. Yield rate refers to the proportion of students who matriculate (i.e. accept an admissions offer and attend the college) after acceptance to a college.[citation needed]"

Don't think that applies in my case, although I'd be flattered if it did. :)

That's true! What worries me is that they waitlisted me after the 1st seat deposit was due... So maybe they actually got a lot of seat deposits in. Sigh... The waiting game continues...:/

Basically that they think that you're qualified to get into a better school, and once you are accepted into those schools, you won't go to theirs. Because apparently schools think we care about their matriculation rates (spoilers: we don't).

And more in the current context, that this late in the process you have likely put down a seat deposit elsewhere at a peer institution (vs the more prestigious side of things) and have been making tentative plans on that front, which is true in my case. [ETA: After all, they do ask what other schools you're applying to, and probably have a pretty good idea (a) how fast those admissions processes work and (b) where you're likely in/wl/dinged.]

Also, just now getting out of my car I heard the beginning of Will Sexton's "Move the Balance (LinkRemoved)" which I misheard as "Move to Dallas." With money at SMU making it cheaper than UH (assuming no money), that's surely a sign, even if only in my mind.

I failed to mention it before, but I found it strange that UHLC fails to inquire about legacies and is the only school I applied to that did. It's also the only school I applied to for which the answer would have been yes.

If so, how are you going to handle the logistics of applying for financial aid w/ STCL and paying the second deposit, etc? The clock is ticking louder and louder on this one and I’m getting pretty frustrated.

I'm right there with you. I got waitlisted 3/7 at UH and sent in a LOCI earlier this month but I'm already in at STCL. I also got into Baylor but tuition is high and I want to live in Houston. I already paid the seat deposit for STCL because what is $300 compared to your top choice school, right? As for financial aid, I send in my TEG and new student applications this week & I'm hoping I'll get an answer from UH before I have to accept any aid.

Good Luck!

I sent mine in already..*fingers crossed*!

I was just looking at the academic calendar for both STCL and UofH and there is a two week margin between the start of classes.. Does anyone know the latest time frame that UofH will accept waitlisted applicants?? I'd hate to get accepted AFTER classes have already started at STCL..
