What sort of housing info do they send out?
Information on how to get on the "roommates needed" list I think. You can post that you're looking for a place, or have a place and need a roommate, etc.

It's possible I'll have a room open in my house (me and two other 1Ls are living here now) because only one roommate is for sure staying at this point. If anyone wants to be away from Iowa City and doesn't mind a 15 minute commute, let me know. We'll help you out with first year :D

Since I want family to come and stay with me occasionally, I don't want any roommates, but that makes sense as to what they would send.

I'm sure it's annoying to some, probably most, but maybe not everyone. It's certainly important stuff to think about. The rhythm of law school is that people take the LSAT, get really excited about where they might get in, get recruited by schools that use fake numbers, then they get in to school and everything kind of crashes. The job prospects are bad, and if you're at a school like Iowa, the place is losing professors left and right and falling in the rankings, and all of a sudden a lot of my 2L peers have buyers' remorse. We have to take care of each other, because the schools sure as hell aren't going to take care of us. A lot of my peers could have really, really used a thread like this with a guy like me posting the stuff I'm posting. I think getting this info out there is important, even if it means I'm kind of a downer in the sea of elation for people going through the process. I haven't presented anything, factually, that folks are disagreeing with. People just have different opinions on how to assess the information.

Long answer: sometimes people should pay more attention to annoying stuff, even if it makes them feel uncomfortable.
I agree a lot of 1L's even have buyers remorse, but it isn't specific to Iowa-- it's the legal profession in general. I do know there are some 2L's on scholarship that have done well and it was a wise investment. However, law school disproportionately (rightly or not) rewards the victors. There is a huge slough of grads who won't find employment in the legal market or who will find employment but won't be enough to service their loans.

Simply don't come into law school with rose tinted glasses. I know this has been knocked around on other threads, but if you can without taking considerable loans, get a dual degree with an MBA/MHA something to make you marketable outside of the legal field.

Edit: How many of these law school students with buyers remorse came into law school wanting to do IP / International / Film / Space / Aviation / some other sort of fluff law?

Dare I bring up the fact that I don't even have Facebook? Lol, no, no I should not.

Congrats to everyone who has been admitted so far! Hopefully acceptances keep rolling out for those of you still waiting.

Pro Tip: Start your own class Facebook page. Chris did and it was a smart decision because no one wants to post stuff that is accessible to the Deans / Faculty etc in the regular group. There are daily conversations / chats / postings in the 'unofficial group'. The official one has been dead for months. See situational censorship.

Dear lord, you are going to feel out of the loop if you don't go to bars AND don't have a Facebook.

I support this.

Our "official" page wasn't even created until March or so I think...

Woah, woah, woah, wait a sec. Remember we established that it is smart (in more than just a purely social sense) to go to the bars? I asked what people's thoughts were IF I didn't go to bars. I was just trying to see how important/prevalent it is in law school. Once people gave the beneficial reasons of doing it, I said it's something I would probably do (although I was a bit resistant to actually drinking).

So while I may not have Facebook, I won't isolate myself from bars. Maybe then I'll feel halfway in the loop!

Well, most law groups / societies hold their functions at bars so....

Lol huh? I don't get this comment...

I just tried to clarify that I see the reason for going to bars and intend on doing so. You then responded by giving me a reason why I'll have to go to bars?

You said what people's thoughts were if you didn't go to bars. Response, you wouldn't really be a part of whatever law group you decide to join. Even the ISBA functions are at bars (Halloween / Prom etc.).

Yeah, I'm not sure why they would include that if the group isn't up and running yet. Maybe they copied a portion of an email from last year and changed the class year, without checking to see if the group was up? I have no idea.

Opie, I can walk you through setting up the group if you want. Although I'd have someone who is 100% attending kick it off, so there isn't a random non-Iowa student as the main administrator :D

Lol are you responding to the sentence that says, " I asked what people's thoughts were IF I didn't go to bars."?

I'm not asking now. I was referencing the discussion we had a few weeks ago in which people, yourself included, said that very thing. Hence why I said, "I asked." I was reminding chrisbru that I had already accepted the fact that going to bars is beneficial.

Do you see why I'm confused by your comments? It is like person A (me) saying, "Yeah, I do like the Packers now. When I had asked what people thought about not liking the Packers, people gave me good reasons to like them" and then person B (you) saying, "Umm, well the Packers have won a lot of Super Bowls, so...."

Trust me. The last thing I want is to get into the bar/drinking debate again.

So it looks like people who were admitted this week went in review around 11/14. Do you think it will take 2 weeks until we find out about our decision, or do you think Iowa didn't get around to actually looking at those earlier apps until last week or so?

Yeah, I'm not quite 100% yet. I'll be 100% if I crunch the numbers and find that I will be able to pay the bills at Iowa. I plan to hit up financial aid soon to get some clarifications. How helpful are they in your experience?

Benefit of going to Iowa: Getting to move into my grandmothers house (since she moved into assisted living). Not glamorous, but free housing isn't a bad option.

Sorry, this may be a stupid question that was clarified earlier in the thread, but is "in progress" for admission decision the same thing as "in review" everyone is talking about? All I've had is "in progress" for a couple of weeks now.

Dude, lucky. Make sure to peel the plastic off of the davenports when you move in. Also, feel free to bring the bowl of hard candies to class.
