That's a strange thing, actually. Before I started at DU, I was considering CU, but found that a lot of the folks there were really down on DU - in an almost oversensitive way. At DU, everyone plays down any sort of competition between the two. And, really, when you're slogging through 500 pages of reading in a week, it's not like there's time to think about what another school is doing!

As far as job competition, it depends on what you're going for. A lot of firms in Denver have DU alumni in their ranks, and they tend to be fiercely loyal to DU. It's not an in, but it's a bump.

The conventional wisdom is that DU tends to have an edge over CU in the Denver firm market, whereas CU has an edge when it comes to clerkships.

I love Colorado and the high quality of life, but the fact that slightly less than 50% are employed at graduation is concerning. On the upside, the Denver market doesn't have the T14 guys flocking to it, and there's only one other school to compete with in the state. Also, the career services office seems to actually care, unlike other schools I've applied to.

Any thoughts?
I wish I could speak to the job market on graduation at this point, but I'm still a couple years away from that point. I do think the numbers are improving, as many of the TAs I had last semester already have offers for after graduation. Of course, this is totally sampling bias, since to be a TA you typically have to have done well enough in the course for the Prof to ask you to help out the next year, so many of the TAs are top 10%. As for everyone else about to graduate, I really have no idea.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Denver has a huge concentration of practicing attorneys per capita (something like one for every twelve or some crazy number like that.) People come to DU or CU from out of town, and end up never leaving because, as you say, Colorado has an awesome quality of life - that tends to increase the competition for jobs. That said, our career office really does seem to care: they send out tons of emails on jobs, internships, and externships; have a bunch of mentoring programs; get consistently good feedback on their resume and cover letter assistance, etc.

DU's numbers sucked all around a few years ago, but since then they've made a concerted effort to bring everything up, including admission numbers, bar passage rate, and employment stats on graduation. Add on to this that Dean Katz is extremely dedicated to producing "practice-ready" lawyers, with tons of clinics (some of the 1L writing classes actually work on real cases), externships, etc., and DU is sitting pretty good as the economy starts to creep back.

Mine went blank sometime this afternoon while I was at work. Any one know why? Does this mean a decision is coming?

Yep. Looking back, mine came Jan. 11 last year. Makes sense now - most final grades are in from last semester, and tomorrow is the first day of classes, so admissions can turn to other business. Good luck!

Finally went blank this afternoon. Tomorrow some news perhaps? Interestingly enough I just played a gig at a conference sponsored by Burg Simpson - Mr. Burg is also an alum and adjunct professor at DU teaching Mass Tort Litigation. Didn't think it was appropriate to bring up DU at the event so I kept my mouth shut. Good move or did I blow a schmoozing opportunity?

I'd call that a missed opportunity, but if you don't think you could have spun it the right way, it could have sounded douchey to start talking about your cycle. It's at least better to not say anything than to start the conversation the wrong way.

First acceptance.

In with 30K a year.

3.6/165/URM (Mexican-American. 3.8 Grad school GPA, not that it matters)

Feels good, especially since CU probably rejected me since they made a decision before my December LSAT score came in. Their loss.

If no top 30 schools comes through, I'll be at DU next year.
