Tough decisions now. 114k at WUSTL, 75k UCLA, 30k Texas....any advice before I visit all three and fall in love with each?

Those are three very different schools with very different home markets. Where do you want to work, where do you have ties to, what are your goals?

Yep. It's the only 3.5 star boutique in Clayton, as far as I know, except for maybe seven gables. That deal was moonrise when I booked it.

I am still so happy about receiving the scholarship yesterday. My wife and I have to go to this workish function thing tonight, where I typically have to listen to people go on about how I should go to the University of South Carolina because of the in-state tuition (21k per year). Now I have something else to say other than a polite rendering of "we have both wanted to move out of this state since we could form thoughts." Now I can just say, "Washington University is cheaper." Anyone in a similar boat?

From Chicago, have no ties to either region/state. Not really sure what my goals are yet. Thinking about working in the public sector but who knows. Probably as indecisive as it gets lol.

Any thoughts on what my odds are of negotiating scholarships slash how much do you think I could realistically hope to end up with?

I'm at 84k right now and it's a good offer but I really feel like I need to bring the cost lower to justify passing up on a t14.

Numbers in profile, made the mistake of not applying to peer schools to leverage (though to be fair no one in the 15-22 range is as generous as WUSTL in the first place)

On another note I think I'll be at the Feb ASW :D

I would think that in terms of having no ties and potential employers not holding it against you in the market of the school, UCLA would be the best bet, since people relocate there all the time. However, is it possible that you are underestimating your ties in Chicago (if you meant you didnt have real ties there)? Ties can sometimes just mean knowing someone well who knows someone. That would speak in favor of WUSTL due to proximity. However, I would think if you try to get a job in St. Louis itself (which is hard for anyone not from there apparently), potential employers would think you would take the first available job to get back to Chicago.

I would be interested in any opinions on this as well. I think that if you are talking about sticker at Texas or Georgetown, you are probably not going to impress them all that much. If you have been accepted to a top 10, maybe? It is definitely tough to consider negotiating with a school as generous as WUSTL, especially if it is your best in terms of COA in the top 25 or so. However, you do have an awesome LSAT score that they will want to keep.

I misread tmon's question and meant that I had no ties to either of those schools. I do have ties to Chicago, have lived here my whole life, but do not want to live here any more (didn't even apply anywhere here). Not out of malice, just 23 years of Chicago winters and Illinois cornfields is enough. Was just wondering what people's opinions were on these on options. Got some higher acceptances with no money though.

T-14 without money is probably a better bet if you specifically don't want Chicago. Since you wont have to the areas you're looking at (unless you've got ties to other areas somehow) you probably want to either go to the best school in an area you'd be happy living in, or go to one that has good reach nationally.

What others options do you have in the T14?

Cornell / GULC, still waiting on Michigan. I work at a law firm and have been made weary by all the first year associates constantly bitching about their $1,500-$2,000 per month (or so they say) student loan bills and have been scared away from paying sticker lol.

I think I remember reading that 1000-1500 was a pretty standard monthly payment for LS loans, so that's not shocking. But I'd rather be paying off high loan payments with the job I got out of LS than unable to pay them back at all, and that's an entirely possible tradeoff if you're comparing Cornell with, say, WUSTL. Take a look at Law School Transparency if you haven't and that'll give you a better idea of expected salaries and placement and such. I'm not totally up on the national reach of those schools, but I suspect that sticker at one of those other options might be better for your goals.

I'm about 99% sure I'm going to take 129,000@WUSTL over 45,000@Michigan. 0 debt vs. 100k in debt sounds amazing. I don't want big law, and I'm ok living anywhere. Plus my wife can easily transfer to St. Louis, but not to Ann Arbor.

Is anyone else taking WUSTL over T14? We should start a club...

Yeah, if you're looking specifically for something that's not biglaw, then by all means minimize the crap out of your debt.

Highly considering it. Living in Chicago I've been to Ann Arbor a few times visiting friends who did undergrad there, and not so sure I want to go back (this is assuming I'll get accepted, which means I'll get denial letter Monday). If Stanford has a brain freeze and accepts me I'll be going though. But as it stands, I am highly considering taking WUSTL's offer, and they only offered me 114,000 (haha only, that amount of money is like literally winning the lottery).

Seriously, this is tough. My only top 20 acceptances are wustl with 84k or UVA at sticker. In the end probably 140k debt vs 240k. Either way it's scary as hell.
