Re: Duke c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
The president of OUTLaw called me last night to talk about LGBTQA issues at Duke - several members of the group were calling admitted folks who had identified as queer on their applications. She was so friendly and had lots of great things to say about the climate for gay folks at Duke and in the research triangle area.
She also mentioned that the academic climate at Duke in general is really cooperative rather than competitive, and that most students are happy to share notes and outlines.

Oh awesome! Yeah, I missed the call because I was in class... Was hoping that they'd catch me before it started, but whatevs, was a nice gesture regardless. Any word on what the LGBT culture is like @ Duke / research triangle? I know I've been a little worried about the idea of jumping from new england to NC for this reason, but I don't know much about the area.splbagel wrote:The president of OUTLaw called me last night to talk about LGBTQA issues at Duke - several members of the group were calling admitted folks who had identified as queer on their applications. thanks, the more i read up on duke/durham the more excited i get. it sounds a bit more chill than other schools, plus the CoL/weather/basketball/ are all awesome too haha (plus the fact that there's a fried chicken and waffles restaurant is amazing).indigomachine wrote:Congrats!maxpower430 wrote:meant to post a few days ago, but I got in via PT on sunday. definitely very excited, I couldn't believe they'd email me over the weekend, but no complaints here haha. also in case anyone is wondering, i wrote a why duke. but anyways, good luck to everyone who's still waiting.

Wait, wha? There's a fried chicken and waffles restaurant?! How did I miss this boat haha.maxpower430 wrote:thanks, the more i read up on duke/durham the more excited i get. it sounds a bit more chill than other schools, plus the CoL/weather/basketball/ are all awesome too haha (plus the fact that there's a fried chicken and waffles restaurant is amazing).indigomachine wrote:Congrats!maxpower430 wrote:meant to post a few days ago, but I got in via PT on sunday. definitely very excited, I couldn't believe they'd email me over the weekend, but no complaints here haha. also in case anyone is wondering, i wrote a why duke. but anyways, good luck to everyone who's still waiting.
But yeah, Duke has been super nice throughout the entire process, not just after I was admitted. I know they have an incentive to be nice to everyone to get them to apply / attend, but it's a nice vibe nonetheless.

Yeah i was reading the ask a duke 1L thread and Bain's Chicken and Waffles came up. suffice to say, with such easy access i'd probably gain like 15 pounds the first year haha.indigomachine wrote:Wait, wha? and i agree, while i haven't had a whole lot of interactions with other schools, Duke was very helpful to expedite things and the non-automated emails were nice too.

I submitted on 11/15, went complete/under review on 11/16 and got the email sunday night. i think things may have gotten thrown off with my app b/c of thanksgiving (though i think i read on this thread someone got their acceptance email on thanksgiving, so who knows). good luck and hth.wphr wrote:for those of you who got in on Sunday, could you tell me when you were complete and under review?! and what time did you get your emails? thanks!

RD Applicants: have your current status dates been changing on the status checker since you changed to "File Under Review" status? Does it change before you get a decision (for the few that have one)?
Mine is stuck on 10/31 (when I changed to "file under review" status). I'm trying to read the tea leaves to work out whether I've been put aside for the waitlist or rejection.

I'm also under review since 10/31. Not necessarily a good sign, but at least you aren't alone.AntipodeanPhil wrote:RD Applicants: have your current status dates been changing on the status checker since you changed to "File Under Review" status? +1. I applied RD and have been UR since 11/14 with no movement whatsoever. I have no idea when I'll hear back from Duke, but it's good to know that there are others in the same boat.Tiago Splitter wrote:I'm also under review since 10/31. Not necessarily a good sign, but at least you aren't alone.
And congrats to wphr! First acceptance is super exciting!

I was given a spot on the Priority Reserve List. My LSAT was at the median, but my GPA was slightly under. Anybody know about any statistics of PR students being accepted later in the process?

Thanks for the responses. Either we are all headed for wl/rejection or Duke just doesn't update the status date until decision time - I'm guessing the latter.amc987 wrote:+1. From perusing this thread, it looks like I have some of the worsts stats of the admitted PTers. LSAT is slightly above 75th, but GPA is well below median. No exceptional softs or urm boosts either, so hang in there everyone.
