Wow, congrats to all! I went UR around 10/27 too, so maybe a pre-Thanksgiving call is coming my way? I'll just hope in vain for now...

Does anyone know if Dean Tom answers phones in the admissions office? If so, I think I may have annoyed him unintentionally. -_-

Is there any sort of gauge as to how many people were accepted today?

What could you have been possibly calling to ask him?sandwiches5000 wrote:Does anyone know if Dean Tom answers phones in the admissions office? If so, I think I may have annoyed him unintentionally. -_-

Haha. Well, I wasn't calling him persay. I was just calling the admissions office. I don't want to go into detail because I don't want to reveal my identity in case they do read this. I just talked to a man who seemed annoyed and he sounded pretty matter-of-fact and official. I didn't really do anything annoying. They were probably just really busy at the time. I was curious if it was actually the Dean though.FryBreadPower wrote:What could you have been possibly calling to ask him?sandwiches5000 wrote:Does anyone know if Dean Tom answers phones in the admissions office? Re: Berkeley c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
I sent an e-mail asking a question, and I got a respone from someone not in the admissions department that specifically said Dean Tom asked her to respond, so it would seem he is involved in managing correspondence. Whether or not it was him you spoke to, I would guess, can not be discerned for certain, but I would suspect it is a possibility.sandwiches5000 wrote:Haha. Well, I wasn't calling him persay. Prop 209
Not to be a bitch, but how did someone with a 159 LSAT and a 3.74 GPA get into Berkeley? Proposition 209 bans public institutions from considering gender, sex or ethnicity in admissions and the person has been discussing getting in because of their race. The California Supreme Court has upheld Prop 209 numerous times and Governor Brown just vetoed a bill which tried to get around this requirement. Unless that person has the most dramatic sob story ever, I don't even want to go there anymore. I'm not necessarily against affirmative action but you'd think that a public school would at least abide by its constitution. It is probably stuff like that (coupled with CA's budget issues) that have led to the school dropping so hard in the ranks....

You need to consider how 'holistic' they try to be with their apps. I work with refugees and if some of them were able to materialize their life stories in a personal statement I would invite them to attend my institution without hesitation regardless of stats. Berkeley has a way of attracting these sorts of candidates as well.

Re: Prop 209
That's why I said I hope they have a dramatic sob story as well. Prop 209 is why the Berkeley application doesn't ask what race/ethnicity you are. I'm fine with someone saying, "I have an interesting background and that's why I'm gonna get into Berkeley." However, just saying, "I probably will have a great chance of getting in because I'm a URM" is suspecting that a California public school would just choose to violate the California constitution just for that individual....a law school no less. Hopefully the individual understands that.gaud wrote:MikulJaxin wrote:Not to be a bitch, but how did someone with a 159 LSAT and a 3.74 GPA get into Berkeley? URM speaking
I do not remember Berkeley not asking about my race, but there was a separate demographics section where they asked things about your hometown, high school, parents, and even friends. While filling out the section I could not help but think it would be an easy way to spot a URM...that section coupled with the personal essay would surely single me out as one.

This. I'm hoping this is a good sign but telling myself that it likely means precious little.hobojarpen wrote:Application just went from being complete (11/10) to UR (11/22).

THIS. I applied 10/28 so I think it's taken an extra-long amount of time to go UR. Berkeley hates me.hobojarpen wrote: Application just went from being complete (11/10) to UR (11/22).
