There tends to be 1400-1600 people who go to faculty review and about 200 are accepted

I thought thtat the interview with dean Tom said 700ish.

I thought the 200 was the number that matriculate.

I believe it's 700-750 students are accepted overall. 500ish of which come from normal decision, 200ish from faculty review.

So out of curiosity, what does Faculty Review mean?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered already, but what are the odds of acceptance from faculty review?

We identify about 1400 to 1600 applications that are very competitive, and these we send to our faculty admissions committee, comprised of six faculty and twelve students. Students serve in an advising capacity on the committee. I admit roughly 550 people through what I call the administrative review process, and the admissions committee (the faculty committee) admits about another 200 or so. So, we end up admitting about 700 to 750 people.

People don't realize that Berkeley is much more selective than the numbers suggest. If you're not admitted early in the cycle, then you're probably not getting it through FR.

200 out of 1400-1600 puts your chances between 12-14%. That's actually higher than the administrative review, which is around 9-10%. I suppose the pool may be more competitive here, but I couldn't say.

I recall reading somewhere that one-third of Berkeley students are admitted based on statistics, one-third as "diversity" candidates (URM and socioeconomic diversity are very important), and one-third based on softs (but still have in-range numbers, mostly from FR). This is slightly reductionary, but still seems to explain the kinds of classes you see at Berkeley. FR is definitely the most competitive part of the process, as most everyone seems pretty qualified.

I really don't see how anyone could make that deduction based on anything other than perception. It seems a bit far-reaching for me.
