And yes - i know for a fact the Minnesota thing is important.

I was merely meaning similarly ranked schools. But every school has its own way of doing things. But thanks for the interesting idea about the personal statement. I hadn't thought of that.

Quite frankly, Indiana has no place in the ranking it has. It's only recently been ranked there, largely due to some interesting admissions and reporting practices. BC isn't similarly ranked consistently. It's been all over the place. Even GWU has been towards 30 in just the past few years. Minnesota is consistent in its rank.

How is that the case when for 2009-2011 (reverse chronological order below) BC & MN had the following rankings:

MN: 20; 22; 20
BC: 26; 28; 27

Based on the past 3 years anyways, there doesn't seem to be much difference at all in "consistency of rankings". I guess if you go farther back?

I suggest looking at all time rankings.... Either way... 27 v. 20 isn't similar in my mind.

Congrats, and this might sound like I'm picking on you, but it's a larger point. Schools can admit or deny whoever the hell they like but something seems off with an admissions staff that admits 167/3.4 and rejects 166/3.75. Holding a bunch of other stuff constant (major, school, disciplinary stuff, etc) should one point on the LSAT, really one question on the LSAT, really be worth more than .35 gpa points?

Its all about the medains <In with a 167/ 3.44 as well (and yes i agree it is messed up)

Misinterpreted what you were saying, thought you were talking only about each school's ranking relative to it's past ranking, not to each other

Keep in mind that as long as the ABA and US News & World Report continue the status quo - schools don't have much leeway here. That's why its important to: 1. Study for the LSAT 2. Apply early and 3. Personalize apps.

This is idiocy. USNWR rankings are meaningless outside the t14. Everything is regional after that. Also if we're talking about Biglaw placement, bc crushes M

It's all YP. Surprised by the extent to which they YP though, compared to other schools.

A reminder to future applicants: be sure to read directions for your applications. Minnesota requests that you address, "Why Minnesota?" in your personal statement, and provides you a 5 page limit to do so.

I'm happy I got in with borderline numbers, but let's be honest people were YP'd

I wrote 3 sentences in that box (all true statements on why I'm interested in Minnesota), but still 3 sentences / vastly worse numbers < great numbers and nothing imo

70% of Minnesota's students come from outside the state. almost half are getting jobs outside the 5 state area. According to NALP, minnesota places over 25% of its class in big law and government jobs. The measure of a schools "national" reach isn't as simple as you'd like to paint it. You're free to call me an idiot - but I think you speak in generalities far too quickly.

I never said YP doesn't happen. I said it only happens if the school doesn't detect a sincere interest. UMN allows for a 5 page PS, and specifically requests that you write about Why Minnesota in it. Not to mention ties to Minnesota, letters, visiting, etc that can help that. That's a bit different than that three sent. box, in terms of sincerity.

Never called you an idiot, bro, just your M and BC aren't "peer schools" nonsense.

Right. But your calling it "nonsense" is entirely predicated on your belief that rankings outside the t14 are meaningless - which I disagree with.

There is a substantial difference between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Or between Wisconsin and Marquette... and so on in terms of employment, the student body it is attracting, the law profs they produce, their journal qualities, etc.

Yea, idk maybe they didn't detect sincerity in them / COMBINED with their numbers. I am very sincere about Minnesota, but I'm not sure they'd be able to tell that I was: never visited, not anywhere close to area, applied to law schools away from area / listed every law school I applied to (16 of them), applied with a fee waiver, wrote only 3 sentences about Minnesota, and all my LOR's were written for every school I applied to. Minnesota could also detect my numbers were in the 20-30 range where as others rejected probably have t14 opportunities

Not really complaining as I'm very happy lol

3.39/171 Waitlist, not sure how much I should make of this? First school I've heard back from, fairly confused, I really worked hard on the personal statement and pretty sure I have good recs.

FWIW I didn't mention UMN in my PS- I did write what I think was a strong Why Minnesota though.

I don't think any part of my application included the word Minnesota in it.. don't worry about that too much.

Anyone else totally get bummed out about UMN though after that dan pi guy gave his input? I was pretty pumped about the school until I paged through his thoughts.

Visit the school for yourself and speak to students first. If you're really worried about the building, don't just rely on the tour.

As someone who spent 3 years of undergrad in the building next door, I can tell you it's not that bad. It's not great, but I don't think it should be a huge deal. It is a public school after all.

Anyways, looking forward to meeting lots of you at asw!
