Hopefully it is not that Long..i'm hoping we get the call in March because i really do not want to ride the waitlist or end up rejected. I just need Harvard to pick up my app and call me so i can stop worrying about Stanford. Its a great school though but as the days pass I feel like my chances shrivel and die.

Also, +1 for this. Story of my life.

But a large chunk of those admitted in March are the URM "auto-admits' (i use this term roughly because stanford is a black hole sometimes). Looking at past cycles stanford doesn't usually accept urm 'auto-admits' early like most schools do....i know people say T-3 doesn't YP but i think they wait a little to see if those URM will withdraw and go to YH. but if you are a urm and u don't hear in march it doesn't mean you are dinged some hear back in april.

I agree with the bolded. I don't really think there is a such thing as an auto-admit at Stanford. They reject so many people with crazy high numbers, and their small class size means that they can really be choosy about who they let in. It might be a bit different for URMs in that there are so few who have high GPAs and score highly on the LSAT (170+) that it isn't as easy for schools to reject the URMs with the strongest academic profiles. Still, looking at LSN, I count 4 URMs who have gotten into Stanford so far. There are 2 URMs who fulfill the high GPA, 170+ LSAT criteria I mentioned: bruno2012 and spek, both of whom have already gotten into HY. Sh@kenb@ke is close--especially because Stanford LOVES high GPAs-- but his LSAT is a little on the low side. 121212 has solid numbers, but I don't think being at both 25ths numbers-wise is going to necessarily lock down a Stanford acceptance.

I'm also not sure it makes sense that Stanford would hold URM applications until later in the cycle to see whether some highly-qualified applicants withdraw to attend Y or H. My sense is that Stanford's reputation is as strong as Harvard's and Yale's. If one were admitted to multiple top 3 schools, my guess is that they'd hang on to those acceptances at least until the ASWs/ aid packages were released. I don't think this usually happens until late-March/ early-April. What would be the point of withdrawing earlier than that? I don't get the sense that there is a statistically relevant number of people who would withdraw from S before the March acceptance wave. Ergo, it's difficult to use that theory to justify the assertion that Stanford postpones the URM acceptances as some kind of soft YP.

I agree with your last paragraph..

On another not looking at LSN i feel like Stanford really should not be as picky as it is with URMs, it seems that out of the top 10, it and Yale are usually the ones that many URMs don't apply to..
Yale can afford to have a black-box cycle with URMs cuz its Yale and has a small class...but Stanford is not really on that level yet. from past cycles it seems like Stanford has not really turned down URMs that are auto-admits at YS and in come cases Columbia. Their class size may be small but Harvard's larger class and Yale's class should swoop a lot of URM auto-admits (because there not that many of them).
I think the whole softs thing really matters when they look at the splitters and reverse splitters...
but in some cases there are no guidelines...i mean last cycle someone got in with a 3.6/161 and another 3.4/165..they really aren't even a splitters or reverse splitters.

I really wasn't shocked about Sh@kenb@ke's acceptance because apart from his softs he did have a great chance at Stanford. But i do find it odd that an AA male with a 3.8/162 (TakeCare http://lawschoolnumbers.com/TakeCare/jd ) has heard from Columbia (postmarked 1/31) and Sh@kenb@ke hasn't. He (TakeCare) seems to be having a smilar cycle to you amc987, you two might be splitter/reverse splitter twins.

its kinda funny how only one AA on lsn (and maybe tls) has gotten into stanford and he has the option of going to Harvard. For now i'm just gonna assume that Dean Deal looks at the URM pile once in two weeks and in the last week of feb she prob will start actively reviewing files..but it would be nice to hear sooner.

P.S. when i compare stats on lsn i tend to take out people with strong urm numbers that get rejected from many if not all of t-14 schools as i just assume their apps were not strong/good. Im really focusing on those with good apps as well as numbers.

Eek, sorry to hear that... coming up close to my 11/30 UR date.

EDIT: Don't mean to assume rejection actually, hope for the best also! :)

So if I went UR late September and am still UR, what does this mean? Am I essentially being held?

same boat (minus your harvard acceptance :P). I'm still at late Sept, and my status checker just says "file submitted for review" - does this mean I'm not even UR yet, technically? gawd

- nvm, looked around the thread and found the answer. so....we're being held? lovely :)

That's what we mean by "under review." As far as I know, there's no status between "your file has been submitted for review" (UR) and "decision letter sent" (DLS).

You are having the oddest URM cycle I have ever seen.

Yep, I'm still UR as of 10/20. Pretty sure we're being held. I'm tempted to withdraw because I know I won't go to Stanford (lovely as it is) even if I get in.

You are an URM right? You may get your decision when Stanford releases its urm batch. But don't worry I think you will be fine. It's Stanford we can't question the almighty Stanford.

I don't think this needs to be unfortunate. If you look at Stanford's acceptance history, it looks like they admit a good amount of their "held" applicants in March/April. I think the trickle in Dec/Jan was for auto-admits, and the March/April admits will be for everyone else.

I don't think there's any reason to be upset at this point.

seeing as DLS seems to be considered a soft death sentence, I'm starting to be newly appreciative of the UR status.

That's a very good point. I'm certainly thankful for not receiving a rejection yet, I just wish that if my odds were so good, they'd go ahead and give me an answer now! Especially for someone like LaCump who has been waiting since late September... they should just go ahead and admit her already! :)

For me it's "unfortunate" because I've heard from everybody else and at this point I'm ready to make a decision as soon as I finish hearing back about financial aid and scholarships within the next few weeks. For a number of reasons I really want to know where I'll be in the fall to start planning (housing, SO's job search, summer plans, budgeting for travel to ASWs), so I'm kind of frustrated that Stanford is dragging me out another couple of months.

Just look at LSN for Stanford last year and you'll see a good number of applicants who submitted in Oct/Nov who didn't get accepted until March/April. Although we can't know whether those applicants were "held", one can only guess that this was the case for them, or they would've heard in Dec/Jan. It seems like Feb to early March is the time for rejections, and there is a second "wave" of acceptances come late March/early April.

DLS this morning. I was UR as of 11/28 (and had zero chance, so I'm surprised they didn't DLS me on 11/29.)

Good luck to everyone still in it!
