Are you a URM by any chance?Elliott_Smith wrote:Just got a packet from Yale with an invitation to apply and a fee waiver application.

Not technically as I understand it? I do have a bit of an unusual background which is what I'm assuming prompted it, my stats are definitely nothing to brag about at Yale.

Cool. I was just curious because I got a packet earlier this cycle geared towards URM/LGBT applicants that came with a bunch of personal statements and 250s and I was wondering if you were talking about the same thing.

Went complete a week ago, but still got that "please apply package." It had a viewbook, a cover letter, and an application for a fee waiver. I'm not a URM or LGBT candidate. Hoping that this is a good sign.

Getting ready to apply, finally happy with my 250.
A few quick questions -
Is there any specific format I should be following for the "activities and work" list or the post-school activities attachment?
What did people do with those?

Re: Yale c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
For the activities and work supplement, I categorized each of my activities as extracurricular, self-support, or "other," and then under the appropriate heading, I listed the name of each activity (along with duration and position) followed by a brief description of what I was doing.
For the post-school activities supplement, I just wrote a single paragraph, double-spaced.
I gave each document a label in the header, along with my name and LSAC #. Hope this helps!

What are you even supposed to talk about in the "Post-school Activities"? If I've been working since graduation, then isn't it all on my resume? Or are they asking about non-work activities (e.g., kickball league, book club, etc.)? Color me confused.

They're asking about non-work activities, such as whether you volunteer somewhere, or are particularly invested in a certain NGO, or maybe write fiction on the side. It's not asking for you to describe your job.jd5 wrote:What are you even supposed to talk about in the "Post-school Activities"? If I've been working since graduation, then isn't it all on my resume? Re: Yale c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
Really? I'm in the process of doing this for my application, and I interpreted it as a brief description of your job and of course other activities that have also been occupying your time. Based on the phrasing ("If it has been more than three months since you attended an educational institution, please describe what you have been doing in the interval"), if working is what you have been doing during that time, shouldn't you discuss that? Any more guidance is appreciated!Doorkeeper wrote:They're asking about non-work activities, such as whether you volunteer somewhere, or are particularly invested in a certain NGO, or maybe write fiction on the side. Sweet, that's about where I'm at, thanks for the help!
This was my understanding as well. I wouldn't worry about it echoing your resume, the activities and work section does that as well.thestillpoint wrote:Doorkeeper wrote: Really? I just popped back into LSAC and noticed that they added that section. It was not there when I sent my application in November.thestillpoint wrote:Really? That is odd. I guess I should fill that out and send it to them...

No, it was there, it was just called something else ("Academic Interruption," I think - you can see why they'd want to change that). But the description is the same. I remember because the change happened right before I submitted my app, and I was worried for a sec before I realized it was the same thing, just a different name.Doorkeeper wrote:I just popped back into LSAC and noticed that they added that section. Finally submitted, for better or worse... probably worse, considering that I still don't like my 250 very much. Oh well! Here's hoping Asha and maybe 3 professors will like it better than I do!

curiouscat wrote: I haven't applied either (softs not up to par, I've decided I'll just resign myself to lurking longingly in the Yale thread...sigh), but, no, I really don't think language or birthplace would be a major boost. The decentralized admissions process makes it unlikely that different readers would know which nationalities/languages are already represented, and, more importantly, they have a lot more relevant factors to consider. If where you lived or the languages you can speak is tied to a great soft or can be turned into an awesome PS, then maybe they can help, but in and of themselves, I doubt it.
Thank you both for your replies. I've decided to try my luck and send in an application. In my biased opinion, I have a rather interesting life story, and I'm hoping my application will at least get looked atElliott_Smith wrote:I disagree. Languages and background tend to be pretty important softs - but yes, you have to actually contextualize them.
Still working away at my 250. Goal is to have it in on the 20th.
