I know I am way behind most of you, but I just got a fee-waiver/viewbook in the mail with a handwritten note from Dean Z. :D SO CUTE. Submitting today!

I never got a viewbook, fee waiver, or handwritten note from Dean Z. But I had a welcome surprise in the way of a hidden fee waiver when I hit submit this morning at 6:30 am. It made me do a little jig. I love free money!

I want that viewbook, though. Sigh.

I thought it was just a hidden waiver when I applied last week. Then I got the packet yesterday. It's a great touch.

I am soooo tired of waiting! and my fingers are starting to hurt from being crossed all the time hahah.

But the admissions office is super helpful. I sent an email re: one of my LORs expecting to wait a week for a form email, and instead got a direct answer later that day. Now I just have to prevent myself from emailing them every day and asking what's going on with my app.

I don't mean to sound overly critical because I am also very anxious about receiving my decisions, but you need to relax a little. It's early November. Almost no one has been accepted anywhere yet. If you're this wired now, you'll almost certainly have made yourself miserable (or given yourself an aneurysm) by the time most people's decisions come back. Plus, you can't possibly be doing yourself any favors by having a constant dialogue with the admissions office.

Good luck with your cycle. Hopefully Michigan will get back to us soon!

Really happy for all of you that got acceptances already. I'm a splitter applying, and while I thought I'd really like to be at Columbia or NYU next fall, I've gradually been starting to realize that Michigan is really looking like the perfect LS for me. Coming from SC I love knowing that there's spirit and a strong network and weirdly enough, it's really the only place I can picture being able to be happy in the snow  . talking to the admissions office for just a waiver was by far the best out of the offices I've spoken with and once I found the pictures thread with all of the Mich. pictures I was drooling. Really trying to stay objective but I'm falling more and more, and that's not even mentioning the combination of awesome programs + national placement.

Anyway I'm gonna stop gushing, I'm still working on perfecting my why Mich essay and DS by tomorrow or Thursday the latest. I was really hoping for a waiver, but my LSAT was released late so I think it's unlikely I'll even get seen through CRS for a few weeks. I think I'm just gonna try to find the money and apply with acceptances already going out. Again, grats to all of you, and hoping I can join in the celebrations soon.

paul34 wrote:They probably can't give you an exact date. Even if they could, I doubt they would. There's no reason for them to semi-obligate themselves by giving you a firm date. Just try to relax and wait. We're all in this together.

+1 - seriously, its going to be a long cycle and you really aren't doing yourself any favors emailing or calling the admissions office. All of them specifically say that doing so it detrimental to their ability to get decisions out promptly and annoying. So there is no polite way to ask when you should expect a decision. There is a plethora of information on here and graphs re: when decisions start rolling out. Look up on LSN some people from last year with similar numbers and submission dates; when they heard is roughly when you can expect to hear as well.

On a side note - I miss Battlestar. Such a great show. Being in Iraq having to deal with the day-to-day insurgency and then watching the episodes on ITunes during the toaster occupation...love a show that makes you think and question what you feel or know. Sigh.

Indeed. BSG was such an epic show. I had never seen anything like it, and still haven't. I don't think any other show has engaged me so much. Very intense, and well done.

Stay safe over there.

You guys are right, definitely was having a moment during my last post. I will be doing my best to get/stay more zen about everything!

A better question would be what is a good balance of contact with the office. A lot of admissions councilors, especially the ones at Michigan who I talked to when I visited, encourage you to stay in touch, BUT

so any suggestions of how to make sure they're aware you're invested, without making yourself a nuisance?

Did you write a Why Michigan? I'm no expert, but I would think you're application is going to carry significantly more weight than how often you contact the admissions office.

My guess is that they are encouraging you to "stay in touch" as in don't hesitate to ask questions that you need answers to in order to properly complete your application. I also think that they say this to visiting prospectives because their jobs are to be the face of the school to potential applicants and, as such, they strive to come off as personable.

You've already demonstrated your investment by sending them a thoughtful, polished application that includes a Why Mich essay specifically detailing your interest in their school.

I did write a Why M? and I'd agree that the app counts for far more than contact. But Michigan is my absolute first choice and its a bit of a stretch for my numbers so I'm looking for every possible advantage.

Avrenim I'd ordinarily agree with you but when I was there the councilor I talked to said that in her experience some students were content to "let whatever happens happen" and didn't contact the office at all, while others were "very aggressive, perhaps overly so" about contacting them, which I believe is what amc987 is cautioning against. But she also said that there was "a balance between the two extremes and that is what they like to see from students". So I assumed from that statement that they wanted to see some contact outside of the app. However that could just be me, anyone else have a take on that?

Yeah, what I meant was that there are acceptable and unacceptable reasons to contact them. If you're emailing them to make sure that a missing LOR has been received and processed, that seems like a much more prudent communication than continuously emailing or calling the adcomms to see whether they've made a decision about your candidacy.

I don't know what you're referring to about needing to show interest separate and apart from the application you already submitted. But I am sure that the admissions officers make a note of when applicants contact them, and as others have also said, you can't be doing yourself favors by calling or emailing them on a regular basis. I don't have any suggestions about how to "show interest" apart from writing a Why Michigan essay and by sending in a relevant update if you haven't received a decision within the standard 10 or 12 week review period. I think you might just have to wait it out with the rest of us...

Wait. Why the hell would you email them whining about not getting a decision? Wait like everyone else. If you want to show interest after you've sent in an app, write a LOCI if you've been WLed.

Thanks amc987, that was what I was looking for. I just wasn't totally sure given her statement if most people were contacting the offices on a regular basis but it looks like she probably meant clarification or specific questions.

Thanks to all of you for snapping me out of my ridiculous funk earlier. I've been crazy stressed lately and its has apparently given me a case of temporary insanity. So I will be doing my best to be zen from now on :D
