You guys are all worked up about some truly trivial smut. I just read the last couple of pages of this thread to see what all the hype was about, and now feel 2% dumber. This whole collective hissyfit is over a complete non-issue. Feeling a little better about being rejected now :)

And even once y'all are lawyers, you can say pretty much whatever you want on anonymous message-boards.

Describing how a school acts will, at times, show that school in a bad light. If any school were to penalize me because I dared to speak out about something they did (even if I was, in fact, mistaken) then its a school I would have no interest in attending. That being said, Dean Z hasn't shown she wants to penalize username. Nor has she said he was wrong in what he said, merely that they are trying to figure out what happened with his award and are reaching out to him.

As to why username apologized? Probably because he thinks all of this is overblow and is a fairly nice person. The easiest way to defuse a situation like this is just to apologize profusely, regardless of whether he is correct or incorrect in this particular situation.

Welcome to the real world. You simply cannot say whatever you like in a public forum. Consequences are reality. Lawyers don't post anything online they don't want attributed to them.

I'd think much less of a school that did something so sleazy as would plenty of others.

Thanks moriarty. Yeah I received an email saying they had received the initial components for my application and said they would send status checker info within 3 to 4 weeks.

They're not anonymous, that's why there's an "anonymous" button in the employment forum. So your posts can ACTUALLY be anonymous

It's the projected amount per year, subject to change--the final amount will be sent to you in a letter.

Can we get back to being nice and helpful again?

Lawyers post stupid stuff online all the time. Although we are cautious by training, that doesn't mean that we don't trust the anonymity of message boards which are actually anonymous if you know how to protect your information. TLS IS anonymous....its just not (obviously) if you post personal identifying information.

I don't agree with posting it on her blog...I would have handled it differently. But, a similar circumstance last year resulted in a mini-riot after someone claimed the admissions office was rude to them on the phone. This then crossed to other sites, resulted in applicants calling the school, etc. These things need to be corrected.

I have no problem with addressing a false claim. But it should have been handled with a little more discretion, IMO. She can address the situation by talking about their policy without discussing the specific case.

She didn't post the name or on any details. What part of her response do you take issue with? How would you link what she said to a fellow classmate?

It's more about the fact that TLS was used to out someone to a dean and that she publicly acknowledge doing so and addressed the specific case, at least to a certain extent. TLS should not be used to start witch hunts.

That's great. You see my tar? I've had my dog recognized in the dog park. I've had fellow students figure out who I was simply based upon posting about something that happened in school. People I have never met have said, "oh you're the guy from TLS with the dog!" You are not anonymous in any sense of the word. More importantly, you shouldn't post anything publicly, anywhere, you don't want classmates and employers to read. Even FB...you can set private but FB has been rumored to sell access to employer's to see past that.

They aren't anonymous....if you post identifying information. The reason there is an anonymous button in the employment forum is to give people a chance to post identifying information here AND post things they would rather be anonymous for (since having more than one TLS account is a bannable offense)

Right. And there is no anonymous posting option. Thus, people should play nice and not out people to adcomms and whatnot. You should also presume that people are not going to play nice and you shouldn't post stuff you don't want other people to know, but how does that absolve someone of the outing?

Shall we all just drop it at this point? It has been resolved.

Person A said something they probably shouldn't have, Person B told Person C, and Person C reached out to Person A to go over the issue.

That's basically what happened. If you take issue with how Person A, B, or C acted, get over it. The world is still round and spinning, and life goes on.

What we should take from this: Don't take anything for granted... wait until you have a paper copy you can hold in your hands before assuming anything (why this has to be said, I don't know, but it seems as if it does need to be said). Also, don't post anything you don't want tracked back to you (why this has to be said, I don't know, but it seems as if it does need to be said).

Moving on... have any WL been reported, yet? A good friend of mine was rolled over from ED and hasn't heard anything since finding out he was rolled over.

Once again, I think the outing was wrong. I would have clarified with the school and then clarified in here. They would have only known I, a current student, needed information to settle a dispute. Not outing people is the very reason current students serve as go-betweens to resolve issues people don't want to bring up themselves.

Edit: the first huge batch of waitlists looks like it came out on 2/25.

Because while I think the outing was wrong in this case, I think defending any claim TLS is anonymous is ridiculous. Wrong or right, shit like this happens and people should comport themselves accordingly.

Obviously, TLS is not anonymous. But there is a certain level of semi-anonymity and actions that degrade that semi-anonymity publicly should be discouraged. Which is why we are generally against outing.

Changing the subject now. Let's discuss whether or not the architect designed this room to match the Enchanted ceiling at Hogwarts.

I mean, you can see the stars all of the time.
