Well if your numbers are OK and you think you are more likely to get wait listed than flat out denied, I think you should wait until your Why Mich and LOCI can be more effective.
Sending in a Why Mich essay now might throw your app further down the "to review" pile, wouldn't it?
/total speculation

Perhaps. My numbers are not solid though, I am applying on softs which has so far worked well this cycle. I imagine my application has probably already been given a look and passed over to the iffy pile, so I foresee either a Why M helping push it over, or being for naught since an admit would already be based on soft considerations

You would think being an American Hero would be enough to get you in, huh?
I think you should write it then. Just remember: no Why X essay is better than a forced/bad Why X essay.

finally got my status checker today and am complete.
I didn't initially write a Why Michigan but am thinking of doing one now. Will they accept one if I email it to them?

I emailed an addendum to Michigan after my app was complete and they added it to my file.

Hey just wanted to let everyone with early status checker dates know they shouldn't lose hope. I got mine at the start of October and thought for sure I was rejected but just got in

There's hope yet!
I submitted 10/31. However, I feel that my circumstances have changed and they were probably holding off on reviewing my app until after the December score release (after I got rolled out of ED).

You can either do it now or, if you think you're going to get WL, you can use it as your LOCI later.

I'm in!
[Redacted] I wrote a Why Michigan? but not a GPA explanation because I didn't want to draw attention to old grades.
Sorry this is incoherent, my hands are shaking. Go Blue!
