Too good an offer to turn down? Not unless UVA gave you more money than Chicago. If they're both sticker, Chicago is credited.

That's some real TLS-think right there. I've visited both, and those 2 schools couldn't be any more different. Personal fit should play a big role in that decision. I'm sure some people are compatible with both experiences, but I'm sure others would be miserable at one or the other. That can't be overlooked as a factor in order to ensure both success and happiness. It's not like it's a choice between Yale and Cooley

I would, but I'm apparently a bit of a masochist. Also, with my split, I'd be lucky to get accepted, much less get any scholarship. Are you any closer to making your decision?

Not really and it's driving me crazy...
Would you have to pay for the whole thing with loans or do you have a buttload of savings? 210k in debt is unfathomable to me.
Then again turning down UVA is also unfathomable haha

Yeah, the loans are terrifying, but I finished UG with no debt and think that the employment boost of going to a T10 is worth the cost in the long run, especially in the current legal job market. I guess I'll find out in a few years if I was wrong.

The debt is bad, but its not as bad as the doom and gloom that everyone on here makes it out to be. Its a T10 school, most people would kill to go to UVA. TLS is full of people who have had a lot of academic success, so their view is different. Most people at UVA are paying sticker (or have a very small scholarship).

Just a friendly reminder - $210 in debt (at 70k/year x 3 @ 7.5957%) is ~$243k by the time you graduate... (that rate is the weighted avg rates for unsubsidized stafford & gradplus loans). So the first year, you'd be paying $18k in interest.

The debt isn't insurmountable, but it's going to be a lot of money - and you'll have to make a lot of money to pay it off. Run the numbers at UVA with sticker price & at your alt school with the money they offered. See what you think, the truth is in the details.

No one needs to actually take out the full amount, or if they do they dont need it.

Must have got your quasi-admission spot for the fall 2013, just received an email from Anne Richards asking if I would consider deferring for a year here is the content of the email:

Good morning.

(Personal portion of email with name etc)...

It may be possible for us to offer you deferred admission to fall 2013. Our deferrals are binding. This means that, if we are able to offer and if you choose to accept deferred admission to fall 2013, you would have to agree to decline any other offers of admission that you currently are holding from other law schools. You also would have to agree not to apply to any other law schools during the deferral year. You would have to pay a $1,000 nonrefundable seat deposit to UVA Law now to hold your seat in our fall 2013 entering class and would be bound to join us in August 2013.

If a binding deferred admission is something that is of interest to you, I will consult with our admissions committee to see if this is something we can do. Please let me know? Feel free to give me a call if you want to talk -- (434) 243-1456.

Thank you.

I'm a little hesitant to commit to this given my circumstances, applied in January after 176 on December lsat..when I applied I had a 3.1x gpa but after this past semester my gpa via LSAC will be roughly 3.2. However, I feel like if I really do take a year off it would be stupid to commit now to UVA and give up any chance at any other t14 (specifically shooting an ED to Michigan) TLS gurus any thoughts?

just PM'd you my thoughts on the matter- but yea your hunch is probably right on this - with a 3.2/176 and a year off (in which you can add a good soft) ED to Michigan (with $ too) will be a definite in and i'd say you have more than a 50% shot at CCN too

I'm not sure about the 50% shot at CCN. CC are definitely out, and with a 3.2 is right on the maybe in maybe out line for NYU on LSN. How reliable is the UMich money thing? I don't think their admissions process is down to a science. Personally if it was me I would definitely take UVa. Bird in the hand...

I think with that LSAT score, you would be doing yourself a disservice to make a binding commitment to UVA.

I'm in the same boat. Was offered deferred admission with almost the exact same numbers. Virginia is my first choice for several reasons and I'm not trying to go anywhere else, but I don't want to cheat myself out of any potential scholarship money. If you don't mind me asking, why do you want Mich over UVA?

I suppose I should have rephrased that to I don't want to eliminate any option of the MVP group of schools by committing to UVA now if I were to be shooting for fall 2013 (Michigan just has a geographical preference over the other two, I am from the midwest). I also didn't apply to Cornell or Northwestern (TLS sufficiently convinced me that out of undergrad as a splitter I had no shot) so I feel like I basically made some strategic mistakes applying this cycle. At the same time I am afraid that if I reapply next fall with a slightly improved GPA and some work experience (it wouldn't be the most impressive) that I will just be stuck with the same wait list problem I currently have and be kicking myself for not accepting UVA when I had the chance.

So what is up with these deferral offers? They're going to waitlist candidates? So I guess they're trying to shore up their numbers for next year? Perhaps anticipating fewer applicants next year? But they're not offering deferral scholarships to students who have deposited like they did a few years ago, right?
