Just curious, did you indicate anywhere in a LOCI or anything that you'd be willing to wait a year and attend next year or was this out of the blue?

Mind if I ask which admissions person sent it?
I sent Cordel and E-mail and got an auto-reply that he's out of the office until Monday, so it shouldn't have been him.

No it was totally out of the blue
It was Anne Richard who sent me the email

I just talked to her and it sounds like I'm guaranteed a spot for 2013 if i decide to wait a year. soooo temptinggggg

Well damn. I guess it was a good thing then. I'd probably take that offer if I could confirm that I'd still be considered for merit scholarship.

She said I'd be considered like a normal applicant for merit-based aid in the 2013 year, but that nothing was guaranteed.

Man I dunno this is such a tough decision for me!! Was pretty set on starting in the fall this year...
Anyone have any suggestions???

Do you currently have a decent job that you could keep doing over the next year? Could you find a job to pay bills for a year? Do you have some money saved up and want to backpack around Europe/hike the Appalachian/learn French before you sell your soul?

If you're unsatisfied with your current offers and said yes to one of the above, I'd take it.

Why are you set on attending this year? That might help to flesh out a decision.

I think that's a really tough offer to turn down if you don't have something comparable and I'm assuming if they offer it to you for the following year, it's binding and you can't turn it down if you get in off another WL?
Currently have deposit down at U of MN (in-state tuition + big scholly + boyfriend just got accepted off the WL there too)

I do have a FT job I can keep working at next year but it's really not that great. I've already done the backpacking thing in SE Asia too so I feel like it'd just be another year of dead time. This will be my fourth year out of undergrad.

edit: yes it is binding. I need to decide by June 15th

If they're offering deferred admission does that mean they're pretty much done with the waitlist as far as other candidates are concerned?

I'm not sure! She told me yesterday that she'll be sending all waitlisted applicants a formal update today

Seems too early for them to say that for sure. All of the T10 schools are still pulling off of their waitlist as far as I can tell, so I'm sure at least a few UVA commits will leave for HYSCCN.

lol we've been together for 4 years and long distance while in law school would suck so bad (impossible maybe??)

I'm not biglaw or bust, but am trying for biglaw. Location isn't a huge factor for me (i can be happy almost anywhere) but East Coast is really appealing and UVA's proximity to DC is just awesome.

Btw to everyone else who's WLed: merit-based aid is all gone so we're looking at sticker if accepted this year

Bear in mind that if you accept you have zero leverage. They know you're attending whether they offer you $0 or $90k

You might want to ask if you could apply to other schools if they were to find themselves unable to offer at least, say $10k/year or whatever you'd be happy with. They should be able to make a decision on aid early on, still giving you time to try elesewhere.

Do you have ties to MN or anywhere in the midwest?

I'm in-state and have lots of ties to MN. Some ties to Chicago. None in East Coast.

Well this sounds like a good kind of dilemma then. I would just talk to , UVa students paying sticker, UMN students, and most importantly your boyfriend. Good luck and congrats either way!

Update e-mail says no waitlist offers made this past week. That's good news in my book as it means no more spots are taken.

Pretty dismal chance, you get a warning every other day the week leading up, a reminder on the day, and then last chance to send it in for like 2 days after

Anyone know if this is an issue, ethical or othewise? I wrote in my final LOCI that I would attend UVA if admitted, which at the time was true. When they admitted me I withdrew from my other acceptances and placed the initial deposit. However, I also was just admitted to Texas off of the waitlist and would like to be able to consider it. Would there be possible negative consequences to withdrawing from UVA?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
