Hot damn, they accepted 163/3.89, 165/3.93 this year ED already, and 4/166, 4/167, 3.96/165, 3.95/165, 3.8/165 ED last year.

Certainly the most formulaic. Get above the 3.85 GPA median and put up a decent LSAT score in the mid 160's and you are a lock through ED.sfreuden wrote:Hmm...is UVa the most reverse splitter-friendly T14? Interesting. Not applicable to my situation, but interesting. What about traditional splitters? There didn't seem to be much love on that graph...Tiago Splitter wrote:Certainly the most formulaic. I haven't taken the LSAT yet but fearing the worst and having a 4.0 I have spent a lot of time on this very issue... with scores THAT low, yes.sfreuden wrote:Hmm...is UVa the most reverse splitter-friendly T14? Assuming high-160s & a 4+, Cornell, Georgetown, & Duke give you a good chance, though the floor seems to be at 167, and Chicago accepted almost everyone with a 4.0+ 168/169 last year on LSN.
I'm ignoring schools on the west coast that love GPAs because I am never moving west of Chicago (and really don't even like it there that much). East coast forever!

(With 166/3.82, UVA is most definitely a reach school for me.)

Actually it's even better for traditional splitters, but mainly because the LSAT score is a lot more controllable than the GPA for most applicants. In other words, if you have a low GPA, just make yourself into a splitter and a top 10 school is within reach.sfreuden wrote:

They do seem to have a 3.0 GPA floor, but "hit that 170 median, apply ED and enjoy Charlottesville" is a common refrain on these boards.

If a strong "Why UVA" is enough to combat the YP, then why is that graph so terrifyingly smattered with yellow? Re: UVA c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
We can't be sure, but a why v def shows serious interest over someone submitting their Harvard app for review. I am sure they don't want to turn away candidates with great numbers that actually want to go there. There isn't really any other way to differentiate between equal candidates other than a few going the extra mile for the school.annyong wrote: If a strong "Why UVA" is enough to combat the YP, then why is that graph so terrifyingly smattered with yellow? Not sure too if they consider how compelling the why UVA is versus just if its written. I would think a short paragraph tagged onto the end of a PS with very little depth probably isn't worth the same amount as a Why UVA that expresses a proven commitment to the area and connection to specific programs/research or what not.
I had YP numbers - I wrote "why" statements for all the schools I applied to that might YP me except one. I had a friend proof them and they felt of the 3, my UVA one was the most compelling, most probably because I've lived in the area for awhile (though not in Virginia) and they have some programs that dovetail nicely with my past experience (besides Yale, I'm leaning toward these 3 schools if they give me money so it was very important to me to prove it to them). It did the trick at UVA and we'll see how the less compelling ones serve me at the other schools. I put one app in without a "why" statement at a school that could YP me out of curiosity. A $16 experiment. It'd be a pretty big coincidence for me to get into the other 3 and not that 1, since the apps are otherwise identical unless the why statement were important.

40% in-state quota + dozens upon dozens of ED admits= Very little room for everyone else.annyong wrote:If a strong "Why UVA" is enough to combat the YP, then why is that graph so terrifyingly smattered with yellow? Did that many people just not write Why UVA essays?

I'm sure a lot of the yellow people wrote the Why UVA essay. I think the school looks for unique commitment in the essay while also focusing their non in-state, non ED, efforts on people just above both medians (think 171-172, 3.85-4.0). Get too much higher than that and they know you are bound for HYS (or CCN with money) and won't waste their time.

just wondering then. (taking into account the 40% quota)
anyone know the percentage or raw number of qualified/overqualified VA resident who apply for UVA? are there THAT many people with 170s and 3.7 and up in VA?
