Hmm. Well they said we should hear by the end of June...here's hoping it is today or tomorrow!

My letter says that "[t]he next determination concerning candidates on Reserve will begin at the end of June."

Is yours different?

Sigh nope, mine says the same thing. I guess I AM being too optimistic in hoping the end of June means this week!

Does anyone have a clue if Columbia allows deferrals for those accepted off of Reserve? I know some other top schools do not, but I can't find anything specifically where Columbia states this.

Anyone?

Congratulations on the job opportunity, especially in this economy. Good luck, either way.

Not 100%, but as a possibility. I have received a great 1-year job opportunity and think it would help me reach my goals of achieving a JD/MBA from Columbia (if I am even admitted in the first place). This is why I wanted to know...

most schools don't. I would highly doubt it.

Would we hear back about whether we are accepted or not off the 2nd reserve list via email? Or are all finalized communications going to be via snail mail?

probably email or phone, since they would want to expedite the process as much as possible at this point in the cycle.

Yes.
Iwerebon indicated that at this point, there was nothing really that I could do. Several other schools said that my continued interest was really helpful, but she was just like "meh, wait and see." I may send something, but I don't think they really care that much about LOCIs

I sent updates every month for a while, but stopped after they basically told me that it wasn't a difference-maker (also, I got into NYU, so my desire to get into CLS, though still there, has gone down a bit)

I got my PhD from a university whose T14 law school I am not applying to so I called the admissions dean as a university alumnus and spoke with him to get advice on applying to other law schools. He openly said LOCIs don't help. From my personal experience, the school I sent a LOCI to every month on a personal printed letterhead and letterhead envelope with real career updates and awards -- not just I love you, visited the school for 2 days, did classes, met profs -- one of whom spoke to the admissions dean for me -- and the admissions dean, rejected me in May. I don't think LOCIs help. I could be wrong. If your LSAT and GPA is what they want, they will call you.

Has anyone heard anything from Columbia? It seems really quiet after second reserve.

The problem with this analysis is that your LOCIs could have helped, just not enough. I find it hard to believe they did nothing, if only to snag the adcom's attention, which is a benefit in and of itself. Secondly, the efficacy of an LOCI is probably going to vary wildly depending on the school receiving it. You're right--some schools are numbers-obsessed; but other's aren't. It is these latter that are more interested in the content offered by an LOCI. Judging by conventional wisdom and the reported words of Columbia admissions representatives, it would appear that Columbia would not fall into this category. But if we are giving weight to some adcomms, we ought to give weight to all of them. I remember reading an interview online where the Duke Dean (and other people) went on at length about the importance of communicating with his office in a waitlist situation, though I can't remember whether he used the acronym "LOCI." Like so many things, it just depends.
