Just got the hold email (at 4:32 as well)...guess it's better than dreading that a small envelope is in the mail.

Submitted early November but, due to a LOR delay, did not go complete until Nov. 22.

Looks like we might live to see another day, zwor and dani. Hold on to my app as long as you want, Columbia.

Held. Finally.

Seriously? A 173/3.77 URM? WTF is Columbia thinking?

I haven't been following their admissions patterns, but they have to extensively accept people from their hold pile if they're holding you.

Vincanity is not a URM technically (w/ regard to admissions).

Mind sharing your submit date? It seems like the hold has reached early Nov. submitters. If you submit way earlier and not held yet it might suggest sth. good?

I'm still waiting with a 175 and a 3.9+ GPA. I'm honestly not sure what to think at this point.

Submitted in December and went complete mid-January. I wouldn't be as concerned if I hadn't seen people with similar/later submit and complete dates get answers.

Still nothing over here. Does the hold email say they'll keep reviewing your app or is it on hold till April or another specified time frame?

Just saying I thought you had a stronger app and would therefore be better proof that they're going to dip into the hold pile later on. Again, said that originally thinking you had already gotten into H. Still not sure if that's true lol

For those interested:

Dear WhiteGuy5:

We wish to inform you that, after careful consideration, your application has been placed in our “Hold” category, which means that your application is still under active consideration by the Admissions Committee.

To provide a context for your present status, we anticipate that, altogether, almost 8,000 candidates will apply during this admissions season for the approximately 380 places. This year’s applicant pool, in keeping with recent years, promises to be among the largest and most highly qualified in our history. Therefore, your current standing represents a testament to your unique strengths and potential fit with Columbia Law School.

While we cannot speculate as to the final outcome of your candidacy, we wish to inform you that yours is one of a select group of applications placed on Hold and that you will be given every possible consideration as the season continues. Consistent with our admissions protocol, some applicants may ultimately be offered admission, some will be placed on Reserve, and others will be informed that their applications for admission have been denied.

....

Thank you again for your patience. We look forward to getting in touch with you as soon as the Committee has rendered a decision.

Warm wishes,
E. Nkonye Iwerebon Dean of Admissions

Also. I give my dates and stats in my first post to those who asked.

For those interested, there were 9,000 applicants to Columbia last year. That's over a 10% decrease in applicants if they expect "almost 8,000 candidates" this year.

Thanks whiteguy, its about as ambiguous as I expected.

It's possible that the reason they are famous for not taking many people off reserve is that the hold list works like priority wait lists at other schools. Either way I'm certain it's a better answer to get than a Reserve or a deny.

Good luck everyone--I'll probably be joining you as soon as they retrieve my application from the black hole it's hiding in.

9k applicants was 2 years ago. There were 7.5k applicants last year. With total applicant volume down more than 15%, I'm really curious to see if they'll hit the ~8k target.
