Whichs begs the question, if everybody uses a phrase with a different purpose than it's original use, which usage is wrong?

the wrong usage is still wrong

I beg to differ.

Or does that mean something different too?

You don't have to beg. We're a pretty open community.

It's OK that you didn't know the correct usage and now you are attempting to defend your mistake by saying "But everybody's doing it!!!!!!!"

I forgive you

As a philosophy major I would like to point out that you're acting in bad faith (pun intended).

Yes, in the context of philosophy, one is correct and the other is incorrect.

But in the context of what the words mean when put together, they're both perfectly acceptable in my mind.

Saying something "begs the question" is the same as saying it "begs [for an answer to] the question [it purports to answer]," and saying that something "begs the question x" is saying it "begs [for an answer to] the question x."

Also, saying "everyone's doing it" is not an evasion but an appeal to linguistic descriptivism.

In conclusion, whateverrr.

Ain't that the beauty o' cultural evolution? Given enough repetition over time, wrong becomes right!

Held today. Submitted 1/9. Not surprising with my stats, but columbia is my top choice! this may help me decide to really bow out of this cycle
