...it's a valid question. The people getting called could say whether they were close to the beginning of the alphabet, which would at least help in guessing.

I'm perfectly calm, but there are people who aren't, and the only purpose to this forum is to discuss people getting in, freak out about getting in, analyze the decision making process, etc. You'll notice it in every single other thread. I don't think there's any need to sarcastically call out people who are worried just because you aren't.

So does anyone know whether or not being "held" at SMU is really a "hold" or it's more or less synonymous with WL, like UIUC seems to have been this cycle?

Some holds get in, most seem to get waitlisted (based on the extremely small sample size on TLS), a few get outright rejected. The downside is that most didn't seem to hear till the end of April. it could be different this year though.
