BTW for those who were held: last year, Harvard accepted people off the hold list as early as late January.

Out of curiously, do you know if those were the KB1 -> hold -> KB2 folks? Or were they hold -> January KB1/KB2?

I know of one Jan hold -> mid-Jan JR1 -> late Jan JR2.

from what i read in the thread, it was a little of both, though i think the kb1 -> hold -> kb2s were more in february.

My instinct says it's slightly better to get the KB1 first...means you were chosen for the interview first, but maybe if you get a hold after your Kb1, they really didn't like your interview, so they'd then prefer to interview people on the hold list to see if they do better?

Also, what is conventional TLS wisdom about hearing (anything) from HLS once you're complete? What I mean is, do people usually get their phone interviews, if any, within 4 weeks of application completion? 6 weeks? Or is it unpredictable? If one doesn't hear anything after a month, is it safe to assume nothing good is happening?

No, I'm 1-2 years out. I think it might be a submission date thing more than a URM thing. I know that a couple of URMs who post here and on LSN were held today. I think they submitted early Oct, though.

It seems like the norm seems to be a few weeks, I can't imagine something like 4 weeks after complete would necessarily mean you won't be getting a KB1.

Harvard is a bit different. After you have been under review for quite a while you will receive an email saying that your application is complete. I got this email about a month after I initially submitted. The timeline after that complete email is widely variable.
