MOST DIFFICULT SCHOLARSHIP FINE PRINT OF 2011...GM?
I put a question out there regarding picking a school, and listed some scholarship data at each school, and it seems that the top 25% class ranking contingency at George Mason for scholarship renewal is not kind (had kind of guessed that much).
But, it got me thinking of what other 2011 "tactics" schools are using to lure students in with scholarhips that probably will only last through the first year.
So far, George Mason's is the most "rigorous" I have seen on TLS. However, if there are others, please list them in the post. If not, just vote GM

Arkansas-Fayetteville has a top 20 percent stipulation for virtually everyone on scholarship. Tuition is 11k even without the scholarship, but top 20% is pretty harsh.

I have been told by students there that John Marshall in Chicago has some scholarships with top 20% stipulations.

Seattle had a top 25% stip, which was a big reason I didn't consider them more.

I think many people are aware that schollys involve subsidizing strong performers to draw them to the school (and that part of this likely involves relying on the full-tuition payments to do so), but I think less people are aware of how harsh the stips for these subsidizees can be.DietCoke wrote:
this has always been the case since the introduction of USNWR. no surprises here. low ranked schools want to reward top performers on the backs of tuition paying low performers.
In any case, I found the specifics interesting (re: specific school cutoffs), even though I was aware that certain schools have harsh stips.

GMU was one of the biggest disappointments of my entire cycle. The fine print for scholarships are horrible, but I also find their paltry scholarship offers ridiculous. This fact, combined with the fact they didn't feed admitted students lunch or give us time to go out to eat during ASD, definitely made them the easiest to withdraw from.

Akron requires top 10-15%, but they were surprisingly up-front about it.

In my Brooklyn scholarship, buried in the middle a ten line paragraph in the middle of a three page letter was a sentence saying that the scholarship was only for the 2011-12 school year. Nowhere else in any of the materials I received note that it is a one year scholarship only, and everything else gives the impression that it is a regular scholly without explicitly saying it is for each year (or there is a stip), etc.
Glad I've been reading those letters carefully and caught it.

All scholarship letters say that (for the most part), they then continue to say they are renewable IF you maintain certain academic standards.IH21 wrote:In my Brooklyn scholarship, buried in the middle a ten line paragraph in the middle of a three page letter was a sentence saying that the scholarship was only for the 2011-12 school year. There was nothing about it being renewable, and no stips. It became very clear after reading it a few times that it is a one and done thing, whether I'm at the top or bottom of my class. IMO they were trying to be sneaky.aliarrow wrote:All scholarship letters say that (for the most part), they then continue to say they are renewable IF you maintain certain academic standards.IH21 wrote:In my Brooklyn scholarship, buried in the middle a ten line paragraph in the middle of a three page letter was a sentence saying that the scholarship was only for the 2011-12 school year. New York Law School, (you know, that esteemed and impressive institution in NY), has a top 15% for their full rides. Woof.

A small price to pay for the ability to let others assume you went to NYU.rocon7383 wrote:New York Law School, (you know, that esteemed and impressive institution in NY), has a top 15% for their full rides. Woof.
