173, 3.8 FWIW. Berkeley is certainly living up to its reputation of accepting based on non-numeric factors. Given that I believe I have very strong softs, I am not sure what those are. But kudos to them for looking at profiles more than numbers.

Waitlist for me as well. My 162/3.7/OOS/non-URM self is both happy and sad. Was hoping to be one of the lucky few who squeeze by on essay/softs alone... Now watch me set up camp on that waitlist and refuse to move. Come on Berkeley - you may have lost interest in me now, but I'll win you over just yet. We're meant to be. Congratulations to all the lucky ones out there!

Dinged. Was expecting it after seeing the blitz of dings ITT tho so it didn't really hurt that much. Just glad to have the decision in tbh, the waiting was killing me.

3.4/170 URM, first decision of any kind this cycle

WL'd. 165/4.0. I guess I'll ride it out. They say it's ranked so I'll know on May 1st where I am. If I'm not in top quartile, don't think it's worth it.

ETA: I have a 4 page Berkeley specific PS. Good softs. Thought i was the kinda student that Berkeley would love. :|

This definitely seems to be true. I was kind of surprised by this one, there seems to be a bunch of people that got on WL with worse numbers than me and I got dinged straight out. My softs are competitive too - obviously there are people with better, but I think I was at least on par in this department.

Rejected 3.5/177, CA resident. Oh well even with instate tuition Berkeley was going to probably end up being more expensive than Columbia or NYU

I think it's very, very difficult to judge one's own softs and how they stack up. From what I know, the committee focuses on the PS and the letters of recommendation. Because of this, it's difficult to know how these will be judged against other applicants. At this stage in the game, with such a competitive pool of applicants, it can really come down to random/tiny differences, although it seems like the people who are accepted tend to be ones that the committee members feel super strong about. And remember, numbers-wise, if each committee member reviews 80 apps, only 6-9 will make it in from that pile. Hopefully this sheds some insight into the process.

Letters of Rec huh? That could make sense. My letters were both written by very, very old philosophy professors. Especially one of them, bless his heart he's the nicest man I know, but things are starting to slide upstairs.
