Late in the game applicants....

Postby vi_vi » Wed Feb 09, 2011 3:06 am

Thought i'd start a thread for those of us not so "on the ball" as everyone else here and ended up applying last minute/late/right on the deadline etc...

My stats:
GPA: 4.05
LSAT: 167 (Dec '10)
B.A Anthropology (UCLA), M.A Sociology (UCLA), M.A. Anthropology (UofC)
URM (1/2 Mexican)
Softs: latin honors, NSF scholarship, several awards, worked at National Endowment for Democracy, Office of Refugee Relations, operated a homeless shelter. Field work in Romania with Roma Gypsy population. Pretty good LOR, Solid PS (im hoping). Interested in International Law/Human Rights.

Schools Applied to (so far):
Harvard: Applied 01/25 Received 01/26 --- No updates so far just "Recieved"
Berkeley: Applied 01/25 Received 01/26 ---"Your File is in review":01/27/11
UCLA: Applied 01/25 Received 01/26 -- Don't know of any status checker
UofC: Applied 01/25 Received 01/26 --"Application Complete" 01/27/11
Columbia: Applied 02/06 Received 02/07---No updates so far
Cornell: Applied 01/25 Received 01/26-- "Processing" 01/26/11
Duke: Applied 02/06 Received 02/07
USC: Applied 01/26 Received 01/27 ---"In Review" 01/28/11
UMich: Applied 02/07 Received 02/08---- No status check as of yet
NYU: Applied 01/25 Received 01/26 ---"Application Under Review" 02/07/11
UPenn: Applied 02/07 Received 02/08
Stanford: Applied 01/25 Received 01/26----"Incomplete" 02/07...didn't know i needed a deans letter.Getting it in ASAP
UVA: Applied 02/02 Received 02/03 ----"File Complete, Pending Review/Decision" 02/03/11

I'm curious to see how they handle applicants who turn in right at the deadline...Im still working on several applications (namely Yale, Northwestern, Georgetown, George Washington, American and Univ Minnesota) and should get those in by this Friday.

Good luck to all us late applicants haha :)

Being URM you honestly have a shot everywhere and I wouldn't settle for lower than CCN. If you don't get it this cycle, it is because you applied late. In that case, I would just wait and submit on September 1st. You are also looking at substantial money if you take the second route. I would bet large schollys at MVP and down. Good luck.

EDIT: Wouldn't settle for lower than CCN, unless large scholly are lower T-14, namely UVa or Michigan.

Thanks, I hope you are right!
It's just a little intimidating coming onto TLS and seeing all these acceptances already! I wish I was more prepared haha.

Good luck!
I sent in some late panic apps too. Mostly just targets/reaches/an extreme reach(HLS) that I was too cheap to apply to back in November.
TLS tends to overstate the importance of applying early - it probably helps, but not to as extreme of an extent as one would think from the forum.

The schools:
HLS - applied 2/1/11, recv'd 2/1/11
Vandy - applied 2/1/11
Fordham - Applied 2/1/11; complete 2/7/11
GW - Applied 2/1/11; complete 2/7/11
UVa - Applied 2/1/11; complete 2/7/11

167/3.52, econ disadvantaged, RA for 1.5 years, Internships
Already in at BU which is where I'm strongly considering going, but if I pull a miracle with HLS/UVA/Vandy/Cornell (Applied to in Nov) then I may reconsider.

Another late applicant here. I sent in my apps on the deadline for a bunch of schools. Full lists of schools and dates can be found here: http://lawschoolnumbers.com/redsoxfan2495.

Hopefully I haven't screwed myself over completely by applying so late. If things don't work out this year I'll just apply very early next cycle with slightly better GPA, LOR and PS.

Seems like you're a shoo in for a lot of the schools if it weren't for applying late in the cycle. Good luck to you!

Good luck to you too, and thanks for giving late applicants our own topic. :)

I belong here too. I applied to all of my schools mid-late January. It's nice to know I'm not the only person in all the land who didn't send in their apps on the very first day. :)

I've already been accepted to 5 schools, so it seems that my cycle hasn't been as doomed as TLS common wisdom would imply (knock on wood for continued luck). My reaches might be a little bit reachier, but I don't feel like I'm at a huge disadvantage.

I hope you all have similar results in your cycle. Good luck fellow late applicants!

Finally! This is the thread I've been looking for, people like me. I couldn't afford to apply last semester, even with fee waivers ($12/school gets expensive)
My stats:
LSAT: 170
LSDAS GPA: 3.4
Softs: Decent, ran large organizations, interned for Parliament, URM, nothing spectacular.

Schools:
Harvard - Received 1/20, Under Review 2/4
Georgetown - Received 1/20, App complete 2/3
IU-B - Recieved 1/24, App complete 2/7
Minnesota - Received 1/25, App complete 1/31, Under Review 2/11
Alabama - Received 1/3, App complete 1/5, Acceptance call 1/13 - full ride
UVA - Received 1/4, App complete 1/6, Acceptance call 2/9 - full ride
UPenn - Received 1/20, App complete 1/28
NYU - Received 1/20, App being processed 1/28
William and Mary - Received 1/26, App complete 2/1

I know some of these are pretty much long shots with my scores, but I'm hoping for the best. Besides, a full ride to UVA was unbelievable so anything's possible!

i went complete at USC 1/21 and haven't budged since. i guess this means you have been fast tracked and i have not. at least you're very likely to go to a higher ranked school, so it shouldn't affect me at all.

I was last minute too. I actually had hoped to send in apps by mid january, but there was a minor disaster on my lsac account that took a couple of weeks to be corrected and I was literally panicked that I wasn't going to get to apply this year at all.

My apps all went complete bw 2-1 and 2-8. I've got two acceptances so far (berk and usd) and am waiting on ucla, harvard and columbia. Stats are 173/3.87 tons of good (I think) work experience and other good softs.

Harvard says there really isn't a disadvantage to being last minute, so I guess we are really putting them to the test! But, I love berk and would be happy to go there if I get nothing else.

Regretting applying late now as I see lots of movement for other candidates that applied months ago. But I can't complain or be rightly impatient because they totally deserve to hear first, after how long they've waited! Also, I would have been so much happier if I didn't get two accepts so quickly when I had mentally prepared myself to not hear anything from anyone until at least mid-March. Now I feel like the other 3 should be getting back to me right now too! Damn those schools for admitting me quickly!

I applied to schools in the first week of January because of a recommendation letter I'd been waiting on since September. I felt so epically stupid for waiting with each week that passed and when January rolled around I considered waiting for the next cycle, but couldn't bring myself to let this cycle pass without trying. I got into Berkeley first, which was the one school I had completely written off as a waste of an application fee. Then I got into Columbia a few days ago and also got a JR1 which definitely could have gone better. I'd say that applying late isn't always the death sentence it's made out to be, though I think I've probably missed out on some scholarship money.
