it might be underrepresented on here because GWU has been so niggardly with its financial aid. GWU hasn't been on my radar at all because the most I can expect of need-based AID is 16k, bringing my post-grad debt to some 160k? do they think I piss gold? because that's only sometimes.

If someone is admitted to GW Law and is offered a scholarship, the $$$ is not transferable. So, if that applicant were to decline the offer of admission, the $$$ originally allocated to him or her does not to go anyone else.

I know it sounds odd, but that's what the financial aid office told me. They do a very good job at letting you know that you should have pretty much no hope for merit $$$ if you didn't already get one, because of the way their budget works (didn't quite understand the details of that).

:( :(

I was told that additional need based awards are given out through the summer and sometimes even in early fall so this might be where the money goes. But if they stick to their 16k cap it doesn't make me very hopeful.

I hope GWU gets like 30 people enrolled this year, and that tomorrow they drop down to a tier 4 school because US News had to make a whole new tier for schools that expect 70k a year with crap for financial aid.

Yup. Officially, officially withdrawing. DC would be sweet, but no way I'm paying sticker over UT/Vandy with $$. Good luck everyone.

ETA: anyone know what email to send a withdrawal to?

Yes. Is that just a "please stop asking and leave us alone" kind of thing? Nice, GW.

Word. I don't think they're going anywhere anytime soon. DC is just a prime location and GW has enough respect in the area to tempt 0L's that can't get T13 or GULC (which are still some pretty bright individuals). I see posters here on TLS all the time who are contemplating GW vs. 15-19 because they <3 DC, they want IP, etc.

They'll also continue to poach students who would be near median at GULC, from GULC, with their 106k deals.

Estimated CoA for 2011-2012 is $74,400, almost $4000 more than last year (they upped tuition by $2000 and upped Room/Board by $2000, not sure the latter is justified considering it seems you could live off of less).

Total CoA of $223,000 is absolutely atrocious and has me reconsidering whether it is worth it even after the $105k scholarship.

Isn't GW CoA comparable to other T20 schools, give or take $3-5k? I guess it comes down to whether you believe GW is "elite" enough to warrant a high price. GW's employment figures, school year opportunities, and reputation are pretty solid, and starting salaries are right up there with other top schools. I think GW with the 105k scholarship is a great decision. It also depends on your other options, but GW isn't a TTTurd sandwich.

GW is the most expensive regional school, to my knowledge. BU/BC have tuition that's about $5000 cheaper and they also estimate lower room/board costs, iirc. WUSTL/Illinois have much cheaper cost of living.

I don't think paying $120,000 to go to GW is a great decision. It's definitely okay (and something I very well may do), but it certainly isn't good or great by any stretch of the imagination. Other than being more expensive, GW's employment figures aren't decidedly better than other top regionals and compared to some they are worse (thinking of BU/BC/Fordham here).

Ideally I would like to be debt free 10 years after law school and a sub-50k starting salary (something that has a high probability coming out of GW) makes paying off $120k starting debt rough if one wants to do it by in 10 years.

Did you see the current usnwr that just got released? GW's employment rate 9 months out is 97%. I thought that was impressive..and it was better than gulc's. I was set to go to gulc, but now don't know what to do since gw is giving me a big scholly.

You don't have to take out an additional $2000 in loans--you can choose a lower amount.

Also, I agree--my jaw dropped when I saw my financial aid package-and I also have the 105k offer. 115k is a lot of risk. I don't think I would take USC at 200k over GW at 115k, but I would probably take anything Vandy or lower at sticker over that offer. I just am not sure.

Really hoping BU can offer me something now that I sent in my GW scholly. I'm telling myself that they haven't gotten back to me because they are working on financial aid packages (still haven't got finaid package from BU) and maybe I'll get it soon. It's gotten to the point where I might even consider BU at sticker over GW against my better judgment. I don't know what job I would find at this point if I were to take time off.

Cost of living does vary by city, but keep in mind, cost of living is not something that a school sets. It's often overvalued to allow students to take out as much as they need in loans. No rule against taking out less than the allotted living expenses the school sets, although ymmv of course.
