speaking of poop, how is it that Northwestern makes this list? i'm from the south and even if x person down here knows that Northwestern exists, they would likely still confuse it with Northeastern.

On Christmas, my grandmom told me to go to Georgetown because it was the best. She said that since I can make a lot of connections with the Georgetown name it is the only option I have that matters. True story.

1. Harvard
2. Yale
3. Stanford
4. Notre Dame
5. Northwestern
6. Georgetown
7. Cornell
8. UChicago (they get very little recognition by the general public, even in Chicago)

10. John Marshall/DePaul/Loyola

I'm from Chicago too. Get rid of Cornell and Gtown and replace it with Michigan. And everyone thinks John Marshall is a shit stack.

Lay prestige is definitely regional.

Ranking Law Schools In California (from my experiences):

Vanderbilt sounds familiar, but most likely because of the Vanderbilt family.
Nobody knows about WUSTL.
UPenn is always confused with Penn State.
Nobody would think of UVA.
If you mention UVA or Michigan, people will just think they're "state schools" which surely rank below California's UC's.
Cornell is one of those schools many have heard of, but few know anything about (including that it's an Ivy)
Chicago doesn't have much lay prestige. Same with Northwestern. Mostly off the radar here.
Berkeley is highly respected and if asked, most Californians would rank it right behind Harvard/Stanford/Yale (probably in that order).

It's hard to discuss law schools with friends/family who know nothing about law schools. I got the Michigan viewbook, and a friend laughed and made a comment along the lines of "why would you want to go to a public university in Detroit for 3 years.. there's no way you'll apply, right?"

This is entirely true. I was pretty surprised by the schools that were and were not in the top, say, 10 or 14 or 25. UCLA was lower than I expected. Michigan and Virginia were much higher than I expected. I didn't know that Cornell had a law school.

Also UChi at 8 is credited people ask you if you mean the University of Illinois AT CHICAGO when you mention it.

Thought it would be interesting to present an international perspective. Ranked in terms of lay prestige (not limited to institutions with law schools) among my friends in China:

Harvard / Yale (known for producing famous politicians)
Princeton (brooding mathematicians)
Stanford (computer science) / Berkeley (physics) / Cal Tech (rocket science) / MIT (whatever natural sciences)
Chicago (economics; how many Nobel Prizes have they won?)
Pennsylvania (Wharton, everyone knows it and respects it)
Columbia / Cornell (famous, not really sure what their strengths are)
Michigan / UCLA (decent; famous for accepting many Chinese applicants)
UT - Austin (kinda good, but definitely not top)

Virginia (off the radar, pretty much on a par with other state flagships, e.g. Florida)

West Coast, particularly SoCal, it would depend on how the game is played. If you just asked people to name the ten best law schools, they would probably come out:

1)Harvard/Yale/Stanford/Princeton in no particular order (though Princeton and Yale would probably slip most peoples minds, the ones who did include it would put it up here.)
5) Berkeley--Though it would be mixed into that first group by a chunk of people.
6)USC
7) UCLA
8 ) NYU or Columbia, whichever big New York school they knew the name of.
9) Duke or Michigan, because they are running out of names of schools they know, they will turn to ones with elite Basketball/football programs.
10) Notre Dame?

If you give a list of the top 30 and ask them to put it in order:

1) Harvard
2) Yale/Stanford, with the probably slight advantage going Yale
4) USC
5) NYU
6) Columbia
7)Notre Dame
8 ) UCLA, although it might be seven
9 ) Duke
10) Michigan?
