I'm still waiting for my initial financial aid....

I've been in final review for at least a decade.

+1 Not just you. No idea how I ended upon that mailing list...

I got it too. I'm also an NYU undergrad alum and have, in general, noticed a huge increase in alumni materials being sent out.

By the way, does anyone else have a 2/28 under review date? I seem to be one....

Yeah... I had to call in a favor via the alumni office, and now they have my real email again...

(sigh)

hey, i went to the ASW and spent about 1.5 hrs total there. i didn't think it was worth it. i knew that no matter what, nyu is the school for me. the only benefit, for me, from the asw was sitting in on the class. i was worried about the socratic method but didn't see it happening. also, i checked out mercer and decided i'd like to live there.

That's amazing to me. I arrived late Thursday afternoon, attended the late Thursday events, and was there all day long Friday. Virtually every single minute was at least interesting, in some cases captivating, and often very helpful— even though I was already leaning toward NYU. I was constantly torn about which class or panel to attend, since there were so many scheduled at once that I wanted to see. I wish it could have been twice as long. I wish I could attend two of them.

(Also, I think the "Socratic method"—both whether it's used and how it's used—depends a lot on the particular professor.)

For me that decision would come down to NYU vs. Penn. A lot of that would probably come down to personal preference on location, programs, etc. 52K is a lot of money, but NYU is REALLY AWESOME!!

Yes I'd take NYU over the last Cornell. Probably over GULC too but if I had a reason to be in DC and wasn't looking at biglaw or bust as my lifeplan then maybe GULC. I'd be up in the air for Penn. What kind of law are you looking towards?

What's the difference in total COA? I'd probably take Penn.

GTFO

But seriously, Penn's CoL is something you should take into account. I agree that the last two options are pretty much out at this point.

I'm not absolutely sure yet, but I do want to keep the option of biglaw at a major city (LA, NY, DC) open.

I don't think this is necessarily impossible from Penn. Have you visited either?

When I was young, but I don't remember so yeah basically, no. But I was born in Philly so I do feel some natural affinity towards the city. But NY is awesome as well.

Do you do any music stuff yourself, or just mostly listen?

Because I'm totally taking over Revue next year, and I need people to do it with

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think Penn and NYU place very similarly into just about every market. I'm sure NYU has an advantage in NYC, but I wouldn't be surprised if Penn outplaced NYU in many other markets.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Personally, I would take NYU, but that is because of the programs at NYU and the opportunity to live and go to school in Manhattan. I don't think there is a clear winner here. Two reasonable people could definitely come up with a different, rational decision.

Does anyone have any success stories in terms of appealing financial aid? You can PM me if you like. For a long time I figured they wouldn't care about UCLA money but... Now I'm realizing I was kind of dumb not to try. Just curious what kinds of experiences people have had.

Not that I'm necessarily getting cold feet here, but... an extra 25k or so certainly wouldn't hurt my decision making process. :)

I was concerned about the NYU name on the west coast (my issue was relative to CLS, but I did look at Penn as well... I can't remember why, it was probably some idiotic thread involving Veyron). I did an entirely unscientific review of the attorney rosters of some big west coast firms. Nothing more sophisticated than pulling that school from the firm's website, looking at the raw numbers for each school, making sure there were both recent hires and older partners, and that's it.

What I found was that CLS and NYU basically had similar representation (just in terms of raw numbers of attorneys and attempting to exclude LLMs), whereas Penn did not appear to place as well. There should be some geographic placement data out there somewhere that's more scientific, however. Additionally this was solely big law, NLJ100 type firms HQd in LA/SF/Palo Alto.
