What it seems UIUC is doing is taking a more holistic approach... not as holistic as Berkeley, but really looking at softs and the personality that comes through the application. I mean, you can have good numbers and still not be someone they'd want representing the school (think Tucker Max type, for example).

This makes sense, I'm a total asshole who would much rather do anything than actually go to class or study :D

Really though, just trying to gain some insight. You make some great points Lwoods. I'm hoping to gain a grasp on how the whole law school admissions process works... And hopefully not kick myself for not trying for a higher ranked school (Duke or UT Austin maybe?). Although I'll probably end up taking my tier 3 full-ride, despite what the majority of people on here tell me!

Would not filling out the "interests" section (optional) have any effect?

Planning on writing a Why Illinois.

I dont remember that section, which I'm guessing means I may have left it blank. I'm in this batch of decisions so I guess I'll find out 1/7! I doubt it makes too much of a difference though.

Is a $20,000 scholarship really a good thing... or just a ploy?

Thanks. It's just checking a box for "what kind of law," something else, and "geographic preference."

In that case, I did fill it out. I imagine it doesn't hold much bearing though.

Haha what? A ploy to get you to come to the law school? I guess so. That's kind of what all scholarships are.

I mean a ploy in the sense of it makes the applicant think she's getting a huge discount when the school will STILL cost her $40,000/ year.

Also, Illinois' scholarship offers seem to be pretty random... idk.

Illinois is not more expensive than other law schools. All schools give out varying scholarship amounts. I don't think anyone who gets a 20K scholarship thinks they are getting a free ride.

Illinois isn't more expensive than its peer schools, so somebody is getting a huge discount when they get $60k knocked off that price tag.

I didn't say it was my scholarship... just that people on here are jumping for joy about 15, 20k scholarships, when the school is $60,000 per year oos.

But why is this unique to Illinois? OOS tuition is 40K. That's pretty standard for law school. Estimated cost of living expenses are 20K but you actually wouldn't even need that much if you lived with a roommate or two. Champaign is really cheap.

People are excited about any kind of scholarship because they want to go to law school and some money is better than none. What is confusing about that?

15k/year scholarship is 45k you don't have to pay back, and considering interest that's probably more like 60k. Are you seriously questioning why people would be happy about 60k in their pockets?

+1
Law school is an investment, everyone is thrilled to get whatever scholarships they can, but either way it is an investment. Everyone has to weigh their own pros and cons and decide what school to invest in. I am happy to have the opportunity to invest in Illinois. Everyone has to decide for themselves about how much they are willing to invest.

+1. It's over a year of law school for free. Thats pretty huge, IMO. If you could pull in-state or in-state after the first year, its even more than that. Over 1/3 of the total tuition cost for 3 years is a big chunk of change. I'm HAPPPYYYYYYYYY

I went in review on 12/17. Do you think they even reviewed any applications after 12/17? My LSAT is below the median but my GPA is decent. I am not convinced I'll get in, but does anyone think they will be making decisions before classes begin again next semester?

I'm not sure when classes begin, but Dean Pless has posted that those currently under review (UR - 12/17) will receive a decision on 1/7.

Good luck!

Bumping to revive this thread...I'm sure this question has been asked before but I'm too lazy to navigate through the pages. Does UIUC call with acceptances and email with rejections? Or do they email acceptances too?

Your response, regardless of what it is, will be emailed to you on the date corresponding to when you went UR as posted by Dean Pless.
