Re: Loyola LA 2011
You go to USD if you want to work there; you go to Loyola If you want LA. If you have connections in (for example) LA but want to go to USD for school, then you may be able to make that choice; same goes for connections in SD but wanting LLS... Simply desiring to go work in the SD or LA job markets won't open doors for you. The fact of the matter is, the schools' respective alumni bases self-selected for one place or another.dtl wrote:I am also most likely going to end up picking between Loyola and USD and figured I would toss this in for your consideration:
Loyola is literally a one city block complex surrounded by a fairly bad neighborhood. You will most likely drive into their compound through the underground parking and drive out to the freeway.
UCD is fucking beautiful and near the beach. It was rated the fourth best kept/scenic campus in the nation last year by USWNR.
This is the only thing leaning me towards USD atm. I do not think the difference in obtaining work in LA is that large if thats where you want to end up going. On the other hand quality of life may very well be much higher at USD.
A Loyolan is going to have more help from LLS alums than a USD student from USD alums (because there are fewer of them in LA). On top of that, a Loyolan will have more opportunities to network and get involved with local attorneys, which also helps in finding LA work... Same song, different verse for the USD student in San Diego.
tl; dr version: There is a pretty big difference. Don't underestimate the power of location, networking, and alumni.

Re: Loyola LA 2011
So I was admitted in December with the $87k scholarship, and I filled out the FAFSA last month...
I just received a letter in the mail with the title "Financial Aid Award Letter", which basically says that I am eligible for several grants, but also says that I'm eligible for a $29,000 "Loyola Scholarship". I'm going to be calling the school first thing Monday morning, but does this sound like they are offering a need-based scholarship on top of the merit-based one? If so, I'm very excited!
P.S. I live in the Los Angeles area, so I'm sure some of you will be getting letters in the mail in the next few days!

Does your letter specifically mention grants? I just received the Financial Aid Award Letter today, and I also have the $29K/year Loyola scholarship, but my letter does not ever mention grants.jamiLAW wrote:So I was admitted in December with the $87k scholarship, and I filled out the FAFSA last month...

Re: Loyola LA 2011
Like the posters above me said, the 29k is the annual compensation from your 87k scholarship. It should say "Loyola Scholarship - entering" in the column to the left of it on your letter. The "grants" you mention, that should appear underneath the scholarship, are most likely not grants, but rather are the loans you will receive to cover the rest of the COA: "Direct Subsidized Loan," "Direct Unsubsidized Loan," and "Direct Graduate Plus Loan." Unless you actually are receiving grants... If you read the back of the second page that came with your letter, it breaks down how to read the information found in your letter.jamiLAW wrote:So I was admitted in December with the $87k scholarship, and I filled out the FAFSA last month...

Ditto here! Required to stay within top 30% of the class and maintain participation in public interest work.dai wrote:Just got my decision letter in the mail today. It was mailed out on the 28th. In with $87k.

I went complete mid-November and I finally received the DR screen today. Loyola is my top-choice so I hope it goes well.

Thanks a lot! I'm a splitter, so I'm really worried. I've been waitlisted on my last 4 or 5 decisions, but it doesn't look like Loyola is waitlisting yet (according to LSN) adding to the anxiety.
Good luck and I hope they finish reviewing your application soon.

same here. went complete 1/21 and decision made (finally!) wednesday 3/9. really really really hoping its an acceptance. i'm in the same boat as you are. 3/4 of my last decisions have been waitlists (albeit at places where i didn't think i would even be waitlisted), and i'm a reverse splitter (high GPA, lowish LSAT).MrMisiu wrote:I went complete mid-November and I finally received the DR screen today. I'm on the east coast too (New Jersey), but fortunately I live in an area that somehow receives mail very quickly- regardless of distance. Letters from California have consistently been arriving four days after they were sent.
