Ole Miss Applicants c/o 2014
Got a big look book in the mail yesterday-- applied back in September. Pretty much a safety for me, but it's Ole Miss... Acceptances should start coming out towards the end of this month! Anyone else out there apply?

I'm not applying here but am an undergrad at Ole Miss and live with a current 1L. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions about the campus or student life or anything. I may be able to help with more specific law school stuff but can't make any promises.

I applied to Ole Miss. It is one of my safeties as well, I figure it is a pretty awesome safety to have on hold. I applied in September too, hopefully I'll hear back soon.

Good luck as well! I've never even been to Mississippi, but I have a lot of friends at Ole Miss for undergrad. They LOVE IT.
Anyways, I went UR on 10/2. I got a big package in the mail from them that was decieving! It was just a look book and other information.

Where did you grow up, Barbie? If you haven't lived in the deep South before, you might be in for some culture shock.Barbie wrote:Good luck as well! I've never even been to Mississippi, but I have a lot of friends at Ole Miss for undergrad. They LOVE IT.

It is a fun place to go to school (at least for a few years)...but more importantly you should be looking at the career prospects. My brother went there, and I can tell you that if you arent top 5%, you won't be getting a job in any major city, and you will probably be making in the neighborhood of 40-50k. I grew up in MS and that is still good money to me, but if that's not okay with you, you should reconsider.Barbie wrote:Good luck as well! For the price of Ole Miss, that wouldn't be SO bad. Plus, isn't the cost of living in Mississippi pretty darn cheap?General Tso wrote:It is a fun place to go to school (at least for a few years)...but more importantly you should be looking at the career prospects. Also, I've heard Ole Miss is pretty stingy on scholarship (prob bc of the low cost anyways)-- does anyone know what one could expect?

It is cheap, and students of higher ranked, more expensive schools (myself included) are not facing much better job prospects anyway.

Where do you go? Do they give out any money? Or how hard is it to get in state tuition? Sorry for all the questions hahaGeneral Tso wrote:in the past they havent given out much scholarship $$Barbie wrote: For the price of Ole Miss, that wouldn't be SO bad. Re: Ole Miss Applicants c/o 2014
i'm a 1L here if anyone has any questions. ole miss admissions can be pretty slow because they have a committee that meets just once a week or so.
The general is right in that you will not be working in any major city if you consider that to be NYC/CHI/LA/DC. There will be a handful that get DC & ATL, and a lot of others will go to memphis, nashville, birmingham, dallas, houston, new orleans, or their little hometowns, it is doubtful that you will land the big firms in the major markets. BUT, you won't land that from most other SEC schools either. there is a lot of out-of-staters here, especially this year.
ole miss is pretty stingy on scholarship $, but tuition is cheap and it is real easy to get in-state after the first year. if anyone has anymore specific questions i can try to answer them.
best of luck y'all.

Applied today 11/15. Hope to go complete within a week after my LOR's are all uploaded. Any idea on when to expect a decision after I go complete?

I finished my app on friday and got an email saturday that my transcripts do not show my degree conferred...which really confuses me because my academic summary reports indicate otherwise. Anyway, I haven't gotten a response from them on how to address whatever it is that needs to be fixed

About 10-15 or so people are gonna get legit (i.e. secondary market equivalent of big/mid law) firm jobs in those cities every year from Ole Miss. Don't mislead people. It's not a bad school by any means, and Oxford is really a fantastic college town.

Re: Ole Miss Applicants c/o 2014
Well, that's true, but I would still think small firms in bigger cities might be an option. And contrary to popular belief, small firms are "legit". In this economy I wouldn't have many qualms about going to Ole Miss on the cheap and making 40k at a small firm (if I wanted to live in the South that is).Aqualibrium wrote:ftfydeadpanic wrote:

You and I have had the discussion about the 40k thing previously. From Ole Miss, I agree it's not such a bad idea. I also agree that small firms can certainly be legit. My comment was really aimed at clarifying what I saw as a 1L whose choice of words inflated the prospects of Ole Miss students for jobs that hover around market salary in those cities.General Tso wrote:Well, that's true, but I would still think small firms in bigger cities might be an option. Re: Ole Miss Applicants c/o 2014
Fair enough...I too try to warn people about being overly optimistic about the careers out of Ole Miss. It is a fine school for 40-50k job right out the gate, but be aware that only 10-15% of the class (at most) is earning the 70-80k they post on their website. And as Aquilibrium rightly points out, you will be fairly confined geographically. There won't be any NYC/DC/Chicago. It'll be medium sized southern cities at best (Memphis/B-ham/New Orleans/Dallas/Jackson) and tiny MS towns at worst (Booneville/Laurel/Meridian/Natchez).Aqualibrium wrote: You and I have had the discussion about the 40k thing previously. Re: Ole Miss Applicants c/o 2014
I will throw mine in - applied 8/31 and got a letter/packet dated 9/3. From the Midwest, like the residency stipulations and low tuition, plus I can adapt to anywhere. I know they are not giving out much on scholarships but at least the cost of living is cheap. Anyone know if a school can waive your first year of out of state tuition? Probably not, but that would be awesome if they can. Waiting on other apps but I know I will at least visit Ole Miss when the new building opens in January.

I wasn't trying to mislead anyone. you made the inference that those people were getting biglaw or even midlaw jobs there. they aren't. it is just that a lot of the kids that attend ole miss are from there, so they return to those markets. there will not be any NYC/DC/Chi. i'm not sure anyone would really think that coming to ole miss. i was in no way trying to imply that. any "biglaw" jobs may be the top 5 students (not even top 5%) in secondary markets.Aqualibrium wrote:ftfydeadpanic wrote:
