I got an acceptance today too!! It was my first choice last year when I couldn't get off the wait list, and my first choice this year too. What a relief!

Anybody familiar with the area and employment prospects? I've only flown in and out of Newark, and would be interested in learning more, especially with respect to how Newark's got its "reputation."

I'm not from Jersey, but I've been to Newark a couple times and caught a Red Bulls game in Harrison. From what I saw, downtown Newark didn't look too bad. (Definitely not as bad as its reputation.) Some of the surrounding neighborhoods/cities (Elizabeth, for example) seem to have more crime, but they're not too close to the city center.

Personally if I attend (which, with the ability to pay instate tuition as an out of state 1L combined with the scholarship they offered makes it extremely plausible) I'd probably live somewhere other than Newark (i.e. Hoboken, and take the train in)

I actually took my LSAT (for the second time) at Rutger's Newark and while Newark doesn't have the greatest reputation, it's easy enough to live in Hoboken and get to Newark. You can actually take the underground shuttle system they have (forget what it's called) from Newark Penn Station (where the PATH goes to) then get almost right to the school by that shuttle. So, you really can avoid walking through the streets with the aid of that shuttle, and it's pretty cheap ($1-$2 I think).

The Newark Light Rail is free for anyone holding a monthly or weekly rail or bus pass with one zone or more.

It is the second stop from Newark Penn and takes about 4 minutes between the two stations.

The trains run quite frequently, so the timing is not really an issue.

I think Hoboken is a great place. When I was working in NYC the commute was awesome. The only thing I don't LOVE about it is that it feels like a college town, especially on the weekends, but that's just a personal thing. That being said, it's clean, safe, and has TONS of good restaurants and bars. It is relatively expensive compared to other parts of North Jersey, but there are ways to make it affordable. I live in a 4th floor walk-up and have two roommates, and my rent is $800/mo. I do live right downtown though, and my place is nice for the cost. There are more affordable apartments, too, but you may have to live further from the PATH or sacrifice some comforts. If you don't want roommates you'll have to pay a pretty penny, but there are plenty of options.

Thanks all for sharing useful info and insightful thoughts. As a family man, I'm also interested in learning more about the housing and public education situations. Is Hoboken under a decent school system? Safe for kids? How expensive? I would need a 3-4 bedroom unit. Thanks again.
