Cowgirl, we communicated before on LSN. I, like you, have been seriously considering St. John's. After these new rankings, I am happy I haven't committed to them yet. What are your thoughts??

SJ 1L here. Pretty sure this has to do with the new reporting of the PT numbers, which have always been on the relatively low end at our school. I expect there will be wide fluctuations in ranking at this level (75-100) for at least a few more years as schools manipulate their reporting numbers. I doubt much will change, if at all, about the school's perception on the street. Go here if it made made sense to you before the new rankings came out. Don't let this drop dissuade you if you were seriously thinking about it.

But I really think it has to do with the PT numbers. Look at Hofstra: completely did away with their PT evening program and are now ranked higher than SJ. Both are very decent schools. These rankings don't mean a thing at this level.

Substantitively, the rankings drop is meaningless.

Schools ranking #50 scored 54 out of 100

Schools ranking #67 scored 49 out of a 100

Schools ranking #95 scored 43 out of 100

To put that in perspective, the difference between #1 and #20 was 29 points -- in contrast to the above, where the difference between #50 and #95 is a mere 11 points. The small difference in scores between schools ranked 50-100 means that wild fluctuations in this tier will be the norm.

I am far from a rankings whore, and I know that for T2 the rankings are pretty much useless because they often fluctuate wildly. My main concern is how SJU is now even closer to the bottom of the NYC market. Year to year changes mean very little, but it is definitely not winning SJU any points in my book.

As an aside, my free housing in Queens has up and evaporated, making SJU a bit more expensive than before. I am seriously leaning toward taking the money at IUB (who, although also nearly meaningless, jumped up 4 spots to #23) and taking my chances out in the Midwest. I still probably wont make my final call until April 1st, and maybe later if I can get off of the GULC WL. But SJU is of course still an option. Full tuition, even at a T2, is nothing to dismiss lightly.

Too much competition fot SJU in NY. There are about 7 schools better then SJU im the NYC. Thats why the employment rate is decreasing rapidly.

Has anyone's Status Checker ever gone blank? I checked mine this morning and I was still in review, and now that entire line has just disappeared.

fvck this shit! 23 place drop?! If this was college football, the dean would be fired and they would shell out millions of our dollars to hire the dean of Harvard. In fact, I'm gonna demand this in my open letter to the school. This is unexpectable!

I agree it wasn't really expected, since everyone said it was moving up ... but not only that, it's unacceptable as well!

When looking at the rankings drop, consider employment statistics. A school like Hofstra has "N/A" listed for "graduates known to be employed at graduation (2009)" whereas SJU lists accurately 60% for this figure. Although this number is low, it is real and I think that SJU should be commended for being honest.

Well, maybe next year it won't report at-graduation employment data like Hofstra and thereby achieve an epic rankings jump. Then all applicants could rest assured on the quality of the school.

lame.

I'm not comparing it to other schools. The dip, and their poor job stats which caused it, is what upsets me. I don't care about Hofstra.

You said in your previous post that the school jumping 15 spots would make you much happier about it. The reality is, for some time it's been pretty common knowledge that St. John's has poor job prospects ITE. A USNWR-provided facelift with the school ranking in the 60s or 70s would not have affected the bottom line for students. If anything, the 23-spot drop could wind up helping students more than ranking gains. It could get the school to light a fire under career services to hustle in trying to improve student placement.

Unfortunately, the cynic in me believes that the usual response to ranking drops is just schools' brain-trusts convening on how to better game the methodology.

Great point. I agree. Did you see the e-mail from Dean Simons to the students? He seems pretty determined to work on job placement and address other areas that this huge drop has brought to light.

I emailed St. John's last week re: my status because the status line on my status had disappeared from the page. They apologized and said a decision has been made, and that all decisions will be posted later today! Hopefully some of us who are still waiting will get some decisions today.
