Got in with a full scholarship. Top 40% needed to renew in full, then it's like top 50% to keep 75% of the money, top 65% to keep half the scholarship (I may be a little off). Certainly will seriously consider SJU.

I'll call in a few weeks and see if they're able to increase my scholarship, but basically SJU was always an option if I didn't get in anywhere in the city after Fordham, Cardozo and BLS. But because I got into American I was still unsure of if I'd want to go to SJU over AU until I heard from Cardozo, anyway.

It matters because things like programs, atmosphere, personal reports, etc. shouldn't weigh as heavily into your decision as money and job opportunities. The thing you need to realize is that law school is essentially a trade school where the end goal is getting a job. A full ride at any school allows you to have much wider spectrum of possible jobs in that you will be able to have some sort of money left over after making your loan payment every month. When you're stuck with $180K worth of debt and a job that pays $50K, what was the point of going to law school?

If you can't get more money out of Cardozo, think long and hard about the amount of money you are taking out in loans. The payment is real and it will be with you for at minimum 10 years. Leaving school with minimal debt enables you to actually have a life and get a house/mortgage/spouse/children without wondering where the money is going to come from.

Hi Everyone,

Happy to be joining in on this discussion. A decision has been made for me as of 1/13. I live very close to the school, so I'm hoping I will receive the packet today. Does anyone know if the decision date is also the date that the letter is sent out?

Hmm, mine only mentions that a decision has been made. I suppose I should be expecting another update when the decision is mailed

In with full ride - top 40% to keep 100%, etc....waiting to hear from BL, Cardozo, Fordham, Columbia and NYU - I'm a high LSAT splitter.....

My app at SJU went complete 12/23, in review 1/3, decision made 1/6, received letter in the mail on 1/10 - hope that helps anyone waiting - good luck to all

I live just outside of NY. They send it to my school address in PA, but that shouldn't have taken longer than 2-3 days. It said it was mailed 12/9, and I left school the 17th with no mail. Called them 2 days before I left, asking where they sent it/if they could send it to my NY address and they said they had. Went on vacation 12/22 and still hadn't heard...they emailed and said they'd resend to NY address, and I got it when I got back (it probably came 12/22, but I had already left). Lo and behold, when I had my mail forwarded from school it WAS sent there. Which kind of annoyed me after the lady on the phone gave me attitude, saying that they weren't sending it to PA.

My status checker went to a decision has been made on 1/5/11, then it said the letter was mailed 1/6/11. I actually got it in the mail on the 12th.

My status said my app is complete. Is it going to change to say its in review? I got the feeling that it doesn't from the message on top, however from a previous post they said it went complete then into review

Soo just out of curiosity, does anyone who plans on attending SJU (or already does) have any thoughts about commuting? Basically a friend and I are looking to room together either on the Lower East Side (I'm told in order to commute to SJU I should live near the J train for the fastest commute possible), or else I'd prefer to live in Brooklyn. I've been told by a couple of students that they know people that commute, and while it's not idea it is definitely doable. I sort of have my heart set on living in Manhattan...I know 1L's tend to have a lot of work the first year, so I don't know if living so far from campus would hurt me or not. Thoughts anyone??

I don't know about commuting to SJU, but when I visited Cardozo the guy who gave me a tour said people live in Brooklyn, Long Island, NJ, Upper East/West side, etc. and Cardozo is in Greenwich Village (lower East), so I think it's doable!

I used to commute to Manhattan from Staten Island to go to school, and to be honest, after a while it did get to be draining. I think this commute was probably worse than the one you'd have though, since I had a ferry ride, a long subway ride, then a long bus ride -- rinse and repeat. My advice is to do the commute a few times from where you plan on living just to get a feel for how long it takes, how stressful it is, and ask yourself if you could see yourself doing this day in and day out. I'd also look into any express buses that go from Queens to Manhattan, if you're willing to pay 5.50$ a ride that is...

People at SJU commute from all over. It's doable, but it's probably a pain, especially if you plan to stay at school late doing work. I'd advise you to do your work in school so you don't have to carry books back and forth on the subway, bus, etc.

It is very difficult to commute to St. John's without a car. I believe the closest trains are the F at 188th/Jamaica Ave., or the E at Queens Blvd. And from there you would need to take either 1 or 2 buses to get to campus. If you're coming from Manhattan, you're probably looking at at least 1 hr and 15 minutes, door to door. If you live in the Flushing/Fresh Meadows area, however, you could get there in about 20 minutes via bus. But it's a really boring area.

Thanks everyone...I'm getting varied responses from a lot of different people, it looks as though if I lived near the right subway (E seems fastest) I could get there in a straight shot plus a quick bus (overall it says 30 minutes on the actual subway). Does this sound about right? I'm stuck taking a bus to the campus after the subway either way right?

I'd say about an hour of total trip time is a good estimate. You could probably walk to STJ from the E train on a nice day. But generally yes, you'll need to take a bus. The buses are pretty efficient though. Lots of people's commutes are much longer and from much further away, so I'm sure you will have no problem.

BTW, in as of today with a $32,500/year scholarship! Top 40% required for retaining full scholarship

did your status now say "in review"? My status says application is complete as of 1/5, however on the top it says my aPp is ready for review or in review with the admissions committee. So was wondering if they actually change the status.

in with $35k/yr scholarship...what is the consensus on st johns? how does it place compared to bls or cardozo? Anyone have any idea how it compares to american? I was really leaning there but this big scholarship is really tempting...

Not that big of a difference between Cardozo bklyn and stjohns. Gotta finish top 10-15% for big law jobs (if you want them) at those schools. Brooklyn is my preference of the three only because I love the area and I know they have a great record of job placement due to a great alumni network. I know nothing about American so I don't want to give you advice out of thin air on that.
