As to my plans, i think after reading the one sided perspective that posters have chosen to look at, its best i keep it to myself.
Also, as to reading, did you not see i was wait-listed? I do not plan on attending, it was a free application to a local school.

Is this because you know deep down somewhere in the furthest reaches of your heart that your "plans" are fucking absurd based on the schools you have applied to?NJcollegestudent wrote:As to my plans, i think after reading the one sided perspective that posters have chosen to look at, its best i keep it to myself.

Some news from the law school from my wait-listed fellow posters. There is a technical glitch and it should update tonight.

Re: Hofstra 2011
I'd just like to balance out some of the crap being spewed here. No one is saying that Hofstra is a great school. The bar passage rate is definitely not good, (although several state schools were lower, though they do not seem to get picked on as much), and the employment stats are obviously gamed (which the administration should be ashamed of). However, I chose to attend one of the schools Hofstra is often lumped in with (St. John's, Brooklyn, Hofstra, etc.) on close to a full-ride 3 years ago, knowing I wanted to go into low-paying public interest/government work upon graduation. I did this rather than attend higher ranked schools for full-cost, as I knew I wanted to live/work in this area, and was luckily able to live at home during school, saving me the cost of most living expenses. The choice to go to one of these schools can be a very wise one, providing you can limit debt as much as possible (I will have zero), and you know that you are not interested in the more lucrative and selective fields (i.e. BigLaw). Of course, as with all of these schools, know full well that your scholarship is not guaranteed. However, even if you do not maintain it, having 1/3 of your years fully paid for is still a decent outcome.
I have received nearly all of the interviews I have applied for for the field in which i am interested (local ADA and other government positions), and while hiring decisions are generally not made until the spring in this area, I am confident that with my experience (summer internships, clinic participation, etc.), I stand a good chance at receiving an offer, or at least just as good of a chance as I would have had at other "better" schools, except without the debt.
In sum, if you are interested in this sort of school, or this line of work, do your homework, try to limit your debt as much as possible, and do whatever you can during your time there to make yourself as marketable as possible. Most importantly, make sure that the type of career you want is in line with the reasonable expectations attendance at such a school will likely bestow upon you (by talking to attorneys and current students). Do not ever assume you will be at the top of your class when doing so.
However, do not treat all of this vitriol aimed at certain schools by some of these internet clowns as Gospel. Ultimately, make whatever you think is the most responsible choice for YOU.

Yes. I hope this doesn't count as one of the earlier mentioned technical glitches. I already told my grandmother (a Hofstra grad).TT09 wrote:Did y'all find out via status checker?

I do not think it was. The admissions representative told me they had glitches earlier, and i called just as the first round of decisions were posted here.

Re: Hofstra 2011
In via status checker today. I'm actually kind of shocked they didn't bother to reject me thinking that my application was some sort of mistake.
I agree with most of the stuff said about the horrors of Hofstra, but I still applied, even though I have the numbers to go to CCN or maybe even YHS. Why? I don't intend to ever practice as a lawyer. I've applied to PhD programs to research an area tangentially related to law, and I would like to try to convince some school to let me pursue the JD concurrently with the PhD so that the JD will better inform my research and aid my career prospects in academia in a non-law field. Because PhD programs are way more selective than law school, I applied to the law schools at every school whose PhD program interests me, expecting to get full scholarships to most of them. Even if I end up at Hofstra for my PhD, I can't see how a Hofstra JD for free when I was going to be there anyway is going to hurt.
There are completely valid reasons for people to apply to and even attend non T-30 schools that don't spell doom for their future. Just thought I'd throw that out there. (And yes, I know this is a highly atypical situation.)

Isn't that exactly what everyone is saying (albeit it not as nicely as you)? The majority of the people in this thread aren't getting anything close to a full ride at Hofstra, St. Johns, etc...though. Some of them seem to think they'll become federal prosecutors, or make 100K plus out of Hofstra and the like, so the debt is worth it. You're smarter than that though. You know what it looked like for your classmates and friends who were deep in debt with no idea how they would pay it off.
The people on TLS may not put things very nicely, but facts are facts. If you are getting waitlisted by the Hofstras of the worlds, or are planning to go into 160k in debt on the off chance that you'll make the money to pay it back or can live on 30-40k and IBR, you aren't so smart. You essentially said the same thing.

No one is saying these schools are per se "bad" they are saying that for the majority of people attending said schools, they are an awful decision.

I'm in but as I said before I probably will not attend. For me ranking and job prospects as far as BigLaw aren't important at all. I plan on going into public interest law (health law specifically) and I am fully aware that I will never bring in the big bucks so I am hoping for some significant need-based grants or scholarships wherever I go. Fortunately I don't have any debt from undergrad which is a victory considering my school is over 50k a year.

Congrats, Spack! You're going to do great! And if Hofstra offers you a full ride I wouldn't completely count them out considering your aspirations.Spack wrote:I'm in but as I said before I probably will not attend. In via status checker as well. Congrats to all those accepted and good luck to those still waiting to hear back.
Even if any of us who got accepted don't plan or end up going there, it is a good feeling to have some decisions before the New Year.
