I'm kind of worried, I have to drive up there and neither i nor my car handles snow/ice well.

Re: IN at GULC c/o 2014
Well, I've only been here for a bit over a year, and last year was somewhat of an anomoly (it snowed a ridiculous amount. It would have been a lot even in New England where I grew up), but based on what I've seen so far....eh, not really.almostfamous wrote:is dc pretty good at keeping the roads clear? im from the south, we can barely function if it snows an inchEntchen wrote:I did. I think we're only going to get a couple of inches though, and it should be over early enough that I don't expect any serious trouble.
Gov't is closing 2 hours early today, though.

The answer is no, only major roads will get attention early on and then clearing the roads will take forever. DC is a terrible city for snow.almostfamous wrote:is dc pretty good at keeping the roads clear? im from the south, we can barely function if it snows an inchEntchen wrote:I did. TITCR. Be sure to allow for a lot of extra time if you're driving in.bdubs wrote:The answer is no, only major roads will get attention early on and then clearing the roads will take forever. DC is a terrible city for snow.

Fortunately traffic shouldn't be too bad. Anything over about 4 inches and all the schools (and often the government) closes.hipstermafia wrote:TITCR. Edit: That's not to say you shouldn't allow extra time. Definitely allow extra time. It is generally worse if it is 3 inches or so, because people go out.

would it be better to try to park somewhere in va and take the metro in? does anyone know of metro stations in alexandria that have overnight parking and that go to union station?

I'd drive all the way in. Streets in the "big important" areas of DC tend to get plowed well.almostfamous wrote:would it be better to try to park somewhere in va and take the metro in? does anyone know of metro stations in alexandria that have overnight parking and that go to union station?
My guess is you're coming up from the South, in which case you'll be on a highway until the last half mile. At that point you are in the big important areas of DC.

Re: IN at GULC c/o 2014
Yeah i 100% agree with this, the area around gulc and union station is probably going to be clearer and you will be right there. Plus, the metro usually stops running above ground if there is 8 inches of snow or more (which especially in the suburbs looks to be possible right now). If that happens tonight it will probably be back up and running by tomorrow afternoon but IMO it's not worth the risk.thelaststraw05 wrote:I'd drive all the way in. ETA: i don't think you can park overnight at any metro station lot (except union station, they have parking that isn't owned by metro), but i could be wrong.

Amtrak is supposed to be pretty good. I figured if they cancel I'll get my money back, and I definitely can't drive in all this anyway so we'll see what happens. Damn snow!almostfamous wrote:oooh i just looked into this too...but do you think those would be delayed or cancelled because of snow too?LegallyBlonde923 wrote:I was planning on driving but I just booked amtrak tickets instead, despite the snow i'm still excited to visit

Well, I booked a ticket on Amtrak, hopefully I'll know early enough tomorrow morning if it'll be cancelled or delayed that I can drive the ~5 hours up there!
The website is only saying it expects delays from NY to Boston, so here's hoping! (plus I can sleep/do hw/read!) I'm so excited to go to D.C. again!

I got an e-mail from my student contact telling me to meet her at a specific location. The campus is so tiny that you can't possibly be lost for too long though.jpk5372 wrote:Ok so I feel really dumb posting this but....does anyone know what building we are supposed to meet in?

For anyone who didn't get to go (to day one of the early ASW), or if those who went want to add/comment.
