The Astros problem starts with the owner. Drayton has had the team on the market for a few years now and wants $700M, which is far overpriced. As long as he is wanting to sell the team, he is not going to spend any money on free agents, and they have dealt a lot of their young talent away in previous years' deals.

I would much rather be a Pirates fan, they have some young talent that should give them hope for the future. The Astros have all of their money tied up in a fat, lazy left fielder who can't hit his weight.

Tech hasn't come through (WL), so for now, last day to commit to Tulsa with a 50% scholy..., or send the money to STCL.
STCL= 50 *3yrs= $150,000
--PROs: Texas school, specialization in what I want to do. Houston Market, supposedly higher starting salary. Professors in areas I like.
--CONs: Huge class size making "top 10%" more difficult, extra 45-50K debt. Administration.

TUL.= 36 *3yrs= $108,000
--PROs: Very small 1L class size, greater chance to excel, saves 40-50K debt. Good Administrative staff
--CONs: Oklahoma. Lack of a specialization or program I like. Don't like the atmosphere. Tuition may rise 10-20% per yr.

WWJD?

Is it statistically sound to say that making a certain ranking is harder when there is a larger class size? Wouldn't the only thing that would change your placement in the rankings be that the overall class at one of the schools is better performing than the other? If you have an evenly spread group of 100 students compared to 500, with the same general abilities, doesn't the difference come out in the wash?

I may be wrong here, but just wanted to ask.

You're absolutely correct. I can't provide any data, because this is a qualitative assertion rather than than qualitative. I am just going to assume that because STCL has double the students, and a part-time program where SOME people can excel with the lower class load, that I *think* it will be harder to be top 10, 20, 30 etc percent, even though a "percent" is exactly that.

Well, with that note, I would say that your only major con to STCL is the debt level. Just a question of how comfortable you are with Houston.

I would say go with the one that gives you a better scholarship. Paying off those loans will be a b**** and these next 3 years are going to fly by, and then all of SallieMae will be on your case.

Txadv11, are you considering tuition increases in your total cost? Because I thought you said that Tulsa was expecting 10-15% increases and STCL seems to be holding the line at $26k. Although, if you haven't that info might just muddle the math and make the decision harder. Fwiw, id pick STCL in your situation since TX>OK.

I was more so referring to the fact that the Pirates haven't even been remotely competitive since the Bush Administration (Bush Sr., not Jr.). That's a long time to be crappy. And yes, Carlos Lee is a fat, lazy left fielder who can't hit his weight. It's tough to hit .360, though. :lol:

In all honesty, I think STCL over Tulsa is a no-brainer in your situation.

Yeah, its a consideration. I don't want to get into what could go up or down, however I do KNOW that tuition at TU is going to be 10-20% higher next year and then 3L. I'd hope to get a scholarship after 1L at STCL, but it is hard to bank on that. For now, I'm just assuming fixed costs with keeping the scholarship, and none at STCL. (what I know now)

Did you decide on the TT vs. STCL choice?

Yeah, I'd still pick STCL over Tulsa.

ETA: Also, when I was at the BLSA Breakfast before the ASR on 4/2, the admissions lady said that after 1L, everybody with a 2.9 is eligible for scholarships. So, if anybody knows the curve, that could help us figure out how many people could get a scholarship after 1L.

Unfortunately, no. I am still waiting on the fin. aid packet from Tech, which hopefully, will be in the mail today. I should have a better idea of what's going on within the next 48 hours.

Dude STCL. The only downside is that the degree is second fiddle to U of H in Houston. But Houston is a HUGE legal market and has somewhat withstood the economic shitstorm, so there are jobs around.

Also, and more importantly, Houston >>>> Tulsa.

Not to mention that STCL's alumni base in Houston is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> to Tulsa's in their respective city. Hell, in their respective state even.

Tech's fin. aid packets won't go out until May, they said so at the ASD.

Paying off student loans will be a bigger bitch if a graduate can't find a job. I would have to think the prospects are better for a STCL grad given the Houston legal market.

Curve is set at 2.6/2.7. 3.0 is around top 33%

I'm on the waitlist and have already sent in a LOCI.
Does anyone recommend visiting? Maybe that would increase my chances - if they're able to put a face to my name?

For those of you who have visited - did you scheduled any type of appointments/tours, or did you just show up?

Accepted in early March, paid my first seat deposit yesterday. Still waiting on UH and a few others but looking like I'm headed to South Texas. :mrgreen:

Where are you getting $50k/year for STCL? I show $26k/yr, or are you adding in living expenses, etc.?
