Wow, just got accepted off of the WL at TTU. Not sure so much now regarding a decision as I was almost deadset on STCL as late as yesterday. Also waiting to hear back from LSU as I was WL'ed there in early Feb., but this kind of throws my plans for a loop.

I was faced with a similar decision earlier in the cycle and decided that between Tech and STCL, the latter is the better option. However, I am also very comfortable working in Houston after graduation.

Tech is a good school but you won't have the same options in Houston if you decide you want to come back. Summers were another part of my decision. It's a lot easier to find summer work locally at STCL than at Tech. I'm married so that was a big deal.

Personally, I think you should go to Tech. Mostly because I am on the WL at STCL and would love your spot to open up.TT09 wrote:Wow, just got accepted off of the WL at TTU. So I am going to need to wear a suit to the ASR on the 30th?
Since the women were discussing jeans, what do the men on the board plan on wearing?

Any decisions announced today? Still waiting, with an "Application Complete" entry since February 8. Doesn't look good. It is obvious that I'm not on their "must have" list.

I think it is an issue of timing and spots. Not necessarily how much or little they want you.moreschool? wrote:Any decisions announced today? Still waiting, with an "Application Complete" entry since February 8. Doesn't look good. It is obvious that I'm not on their "must have" list.

You're probably right, although I can't help but think that they look at least at the raw numbers when an application comes in. My guess is that if I were 175/3.85 (I'm not!) they would have already gotten around to taking a look at my file! So, this may mean that I'm in the pile of applications that are considered for whatever spots happen to be left over when they make their first round of offers.

Actually if you were a 175, 3.85, they would consider rejecting (yield-protection) you because the people who have that high of an index don't show up to STCL, even Houston-ites, would go to U of H.
But yeah, I bet you are right, they probably "screen" the apps first, although I think they actually print up 3 copies of your app and give them to 3 faculty members, whom decide your fate.

I totally support them trying to diversify the legal community and I think they try very hard, but the quality of the education, job prospects, and respect is low. I really did hear a professor say that TSU has been in jeopardy of losing the accreditation.
If you didn't have any other choices, I'd say rethink things, but possibly go. But I'd jump on St. Mary's if STCL doesn't work.
I think St. Marys is a fine school, I am just not sure if I'd want to be stuck in SA for at least a decade.

how do you think a student who is top 5% in St. Mary's would look trying to transfer to a t-14 or a t6 like chicago?

Re: South Texas 2011
From what I've seen, you could try and ED to Chicago, Top 5% would possibly get you in at GULC. <--- GULC takes like 100+ students each year from transfers!merc280 wrote:txadv11 wrote:PLEASE don't go to TSU.merc280 wrote:i'm still waiting. now wondering if I should go to either TSU or St. Mary's if I don't get into STCL.

Just don't forget that you may not be able to transfer and you'll have to go somewhere you'd be okay graduating from. That is why I didn't take decent money from Wesleyan and am potentially going to STCL at sticker, sigh.

would the grad plus loan cover all the costs that a scholarship doesnt pay or does it top out at $20K? Aren't discover loans good, if grad plus loans don't work out?

More decisions will come on the 15th when they don't receive checks from people going to other schools. That was the due date for my check.

Stafford, Federal Direct is 20,500 total (8,500 of it is interest free until graduation) The interest rate is currently 6.8%merc280 wrote:would the grad plus loan cover all the costs that a scholarship doesnt pay or does it top out at $20K? Grad Loan Plus will let you borrow up to the school's "max", after the direct, interest is 7.9%
So for STCL at sticker, NO grants or scholarships assumed.
49,000 is the MAX that you could borrow. I think things change for married people, but I'll keep it easy. TEG could factor in, so would military benefits, I guess?
20,500 Federal Direct
28,500 Grad Loan Plus
49,000 Total.
Grad Loan Plus requires a credit check, but I think they only look for negative things like defaults, levies, leins, etc

Thanks for the info. Why is it that some people go to third party lenders, is it because they don't get approved for the government loans?txadv11 wrote:Stafford, Federal Direct is 20,500 total (8,500 of it is interest free until graduation) The interest rate is currently 6.8%merc280 wrote:would the grad plus loan cover all the costs that a scholarship doesnt pay or does it top out at $20K?
