Are you considering UCLA or USC? I personally like UCLA a lot, but that's just based on the students I have met from UCLA. I have no knowledge of either school's placement.

I'd actually be a sis, haha. I think my plan is to see how this cycle goes, but since I'm in my last year of UG I'd rather get a good GPA boost and if I need to retake, retake when I could actually put some good studying in (so I'm thinking June). By then I think I could get my LSAC GPA up to a 3.76, my degree GPA a 3.8, aim for a 170+, meanwhile get some WE in education or something like that. If I get held I'll be writing a Why UT essay ASAP.

I got an email that said they received my application, but nothing regarding status check. Does that come later?

Yeah, I applied ED and didn't get my status checker until over a week after I got the application received email.

Ya, I applied 11/3, application received e-mail 11/5, status checker today.

You're an UG at UT?

Nope, I'm at another top public in the East.

I want to go to the best law school in a warm, liberal, musical city, and I'm not a huge fan of California, and I have a lot of love for public schools. It also works out well with my SO, who works in music production.

Why no love for California?

Well, not California, but the places in California where I could get into law school. My brother lived in LA for awhile and I'm just not a huge fan of the city, and there's no way I could get into UC Berkeley. I'm also a little weary of its economy - I have a lot of relatives out there and things just aren't going so well.

OK, yeah, I think you guys would like Austin then. Very cool vibe, cool music scene. It's not as pretentious as Cali, and the law school is terrific (in theory anyway). Good luck. I'd still recommend a retake, but that's because I love the LSAT.

Also, apply to Vandy. If you haven't considered Vandy, you should reconsider.

If his GPA is above 3.7 he probably has a good shot of getting in? UT's medians last year were 167/3.71 I believe.

I am, haha, but I don't think it will go well - I'm below both medians. My parents are actually alumni there, but only for undergrad.

(I'm a girl, btw).

That doesn't change anything! You and your SO (boy or girl) will love Austin. It is a very welcoming place.

Dinged via status checker (11/20/2010). Knew I had about a 1 in a million there, so I'm not too crushed. UT was the dream. (167/3.36/URM Mex. Am.) I guess I'll wait for Georgetown and Cornell, I guess.

170/3.4

It's definitely not a rejection. I had a very successful result after a hold. That was two years ago, but it's the same admissions dean. They probably want to take a look at the class profile more carefully before they decide on a splitter. Your GPA is not going help UT's numbers.

Huh, crazy. I was just assuming that my GPA pretty much excludes me from UT (particularly after another 170/3.4 was dinged), but I guess we'll see what happens.

I would take it as a very positive sign and fight for a spot unless you're not really into UT.

Yeah, I'm really encouraged by this. Should I send in an LOCI? I'm not actually sure what the protocol is after being held. Hopefully my grades from this semester will push things in my favor, but what else can I do to hedge my bets with Texas?

I definitely think a grade update is in order if you GPA moves up at all after this semester. As far as a LOCI, I suggest you find out if the admissions office is open to that or not. However, I view a hold as an invitation to submit a LOCI.

Right on, I'll definitely see what I can do. Thanks a lot man.

Any out-of-staters receive in-state tuition yet?

That's a part of my scholarship offer. I think most people in the first wave got it.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm really hoping for in-state tuition, but it's been a week since I got my acceptance packet in the mail, and still no scholarship info...

They also have a matching program, so if you have offers from other schools, try to apply and leverage at least the waiver. You can even try to appeal to them for a waiver if you can attend your state school for a lot less (better if it's a peer school obviously). Good luck!
