Re: IOWA 2011

I go to school at the University of Iowa, and what I've always heard is that within 2 weeks you will get a larger admissions packet that will include scholarship information, if any. While it may not be a "hard and fast rule" that the admissions office is going to admit to, the law students I have talked to all said that is when their information came. I'm sure that in April they might give some scholarships if they have any money left, but in past years, students have found out a few weeks after getting accepted.

I was admitted around 12/3, my numbers are high for Iowa and I'm an Iowa resident, and I haven't heard anything regarding scholarships, so I'm going to proceed with the assumption that they haven't been sent yet--just to keep my sanity. Would have been nice to know before the winter break.

Hope this helps! If anyone has any questions at the University of Iowa in general I would be happy to answer.

Congrats, That is gonna be huge! How much of a role does residency play with U Iowa? I know their goal is to have about half the class come from the state. I'm not sure if anybody out there could answer this for me, but any help would me much appreciated.

As for the residency question...

Residency plays a large role for Iowa--and the admissions office will openly admit this. Iowa's Board of Regents "requires" that 50% of the incoming class are residents of Iowa. This is difficult for Iowa to achieve because it's a smaller state and not many Iowa resident's apply for law school. I've been told multiple times that Iowa students get 2 points added to their LSAT, I'm not sure if this is true, but the point is that residents are favored (in some way) in the admissions process. They know that is they don't admit some Iowa residents who may have lower #'s they won't reach the requirement.

I'm pretty sure the residency and the fact that I got my undergrad degree at Iowa are the only reasons I got prelim waitlisted. 3.7 151. Denied from 6 other (way worse) schools.

Does anybody by chance know how long prelim waitlisters have to wait until they find out a decision. I have a full time job and if I find out one week before school starts that i'm admitted, I'm not sure I would be able to go.

From what I found, preliminary waitlist is just another word for waitlist. They told Barbie it was a bit different and that you can be reconsidered at any time, but they told me it is basically the same. Maybe Barbie was just a better overall applicant than me?

lol. no.
she said most people on the prelim waitlist end up on the waitlist. But, she said that prelim waitlists could be taken off anytime between now and... april or something. Regular waitlists for SURE won't be taken off until after this time. I suppose that is the only difference. (In other words, I guess it makes more sense for someone on a prelim waitlist to send LOCIs, etc.)

If you're truly interested in the school and have something to say, asap. By May there will be a lot less seats/more applicants/etc.

You would want to send it straight to the admissions office. Search "how to write a LOCI" or something similar in the search function at the bottom, there should be plenty of detailed suggestions as to where to go from here!

I woke up and checked the email on my phone, and saw a subject line "congratulations you've been admitted" and got extremely excited....just Iowa, delivering news I found out a week ago via the status checker! I received the snail mail letter before the email!

Im prelim waitlist, and my status checker wasnt updated but they put a little blurb at the top about the waitlist process and submitting LOCIs. Here's what it said.

"We thank you for your continued interest in The University of Iowa College of Law. At this time your applicaiton has been placed on the waiting list. While a final decision may be made at any time, we do not anticipate reviewing those on the waiting list until the Spring.

At this time, Iowa does not require additional information or documents. However, we do accept letters of continued interest or additional documents that you would like to make available for the Admissions Committee to view. These may be submitted as an email attachment to law-admissions@uiowa.edu."

I was accepted 12/6. Still no scholly info. Anyone else accepted in December (beside the merit scholars receiving full rides) receive a scholarship offer? I'm above both medians so I think I'd get something, but who knows.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
