Look, Emory taking its time makes no impact on me, personally. I have until early-Apr to make MY decision

However, there are many students who will be adversely affected by this. Moreover, we were reflecting that it might be bad for Emory to do it like this, since they might lose top students they would be able to attract otherwise.

Let's face it, the tone is a little acerbic b/c there's been a lack of clear communication.

ze2151: Question for you. Is it fair to characterize Emory as a party law school? I think I read somewhere that you guys have multiple bar reviews per week. Should I take this as an indicator that Emory students are work hard/play hard types?

ze: Please take our comments - and mine in particular - in the spirit in which they are intended. I really, really, really like Emory and I hope to join you there soon. Certain things have concerned me, though. I really appreciate your message and look forward to more insight from you.

tttlllsss- that might be true. but it might also be the case that, for most students, they treat law school admissions the same way rod tidwell would. i know i was that type of student. my acceptance to uva came thanksgiving weekend. i didn't know how much money i'd get there until march. i'm not at uva. i don't see how my anecdotal evidence is any less compelling than your hypothetical evidence. and help me out here... at worst, you could say that emory's "lack of communication" amounts to nonfeasance, not misfeasance. but did you mean my tone was acerbic?... well you're probably right there, and i apologize.

cade- emory is a party school as much as probably any other school that has 800 people, most of whom are between 22-27. there's a keg every thursday, and thurs, fri, sat, there are places to go for emory students. weekly emails circulate to everyone, so we all know where the party will be. however, i have only gone to one or two of these bar reviews, and i hit the keg only occasionally. and i don't feel out of place at all. we work hard, and many of us play hard. but everyone can bring it in the classroom, and i wouldn't say even one student here doesn't appreciate the seriousness of what's going on.

ze: What would you say is the demeanor of the student body? Is it a collegial place? Very competitive? Also, what have you heard about people leaving the south after graduation to venture up north? Have folks been able to get jobs in NY/Bos/DC? Thanks

I'm quite curious about this as well...

This thread is starting to derail ... these questions should really be asked in the "Discuss your law school" board.

ehh, I'd agree if there were more activity on this thread. But what are we really sidetracking the discussion from? A whole bunch of people declaring their complete dates??? Until we start seeing some decisions I think anything Emory related is fair game.

If for no other reason at least so the knowledge would be in the right location so other TLS'ers are able to access it. I doubt many will come to page 14 of the Emory waiting thread of 2011 looking for info from an insiders perspective of Emory.

Fair enough. Although I doubt anything ze will contribute here couldn't be found in just those threads. I guess I'm just lazy and don't feel like navigating around myself.

Thread derails? That never happens around here...

Emory is a great place to go to school, and I have no complaints about the student body. The usual gold standard of "friendly, helpful student body" is the following anecdote, retold ad nauseum- "one time, i was sick, and like three people gave me their notes before i even asked!!!" Does that happen here? Yes, all the time. But I think the feeling of community here is a little more abstract than just that. You can get your notes at any law school. But I actually like my classmates, and they like me, I think. Everyone will tell you law school is like high school. Often that's true. But I hated high school, and I like it here. I don't see as many cliques running around. Will you occasionally run into a herd of beautiful people who won't spare you the time of day? Maybe, but that would be an extremely rare occurrence (by that I mean the cold shoulder treatment, not the idea that you'll never run into good looking people).

People can get out of the South and head north, but as with most schools in Emory's range, it's better to be top third if you have that as a goal. If you aren't in that upper tier, your better bet is to work Emory's extensive alumni network down here. And it is extensive. But anecdotally, I know many people that are off to the North come graduation. If you're from the North originally, so much the better.

I'm with Cade. As long as the subject of the post is Emory, it's not being "derailed." This section of TLS gets 10x the traffic as "discuss your law school." I mean look at the UW thread for example, there's probably 10 pages of pictures of Seattle in it... If you only want numbers and dates, there's always LSN.

Does Emory plan on having a class next year? Why have no decisions been made yet?

The Dean sent an email out today saying decisions are going out in a few days.

So....

What are the chances that the 1st batch goes out tomorrow?

I know he said "few days" which technically could imply any time next week. Wouldn't it be sort of cruel, however, to send out that e-mail and leave everyone waiting?

Is anyone from Georgia? I am a West Virginian so I doubt I will be one of the first to receive the packet.

FYI, last year, Emory didn't release decisions in "batches". Instead, it looks like they sent out some decisions every day, in a continuous stream, so to speak.

Would be interesting if they did the same thing this time around.

The email yesterday said to make sure the address was on our safe lists, so they might be coming by email.

acceptances will be coming by snail mail

http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=104508&p=4007624#p4007624

Emory_Rob wrote:I’m a bit surprised there haven’t been any more questions posted here, though I just visited the other Emory thread and see that a lot of people have been wondering about some things.

We are doing our acceptance notification a bit differently this year than last year – last year we issued them in a slow and steady stream over the course of a couple of months, which was pretty inefficient. This year we’re doing them in big batches which will allow us to improve the process in a few ways, some of which you will see and some of which you won’t. I can tell you that about 400 notifications left my part of the process about a week ago, and not quite another 200 today. I wish I had a better idea of how long it will take them to get from my desk to your mailbox, but since it’s the first time we’re doing it this way I don’t really know. Dean Rosenzweig had the first batch on his desk at the first part of this week, so I hope they’ll be arriving any time now.

Just to clear up one other thing, you will be getting your acceptance letters via snail mail, but other important communications will be sent via email.
