I'm on the wait-list! At least you are in a better boat than me! Haha.

WUSTL leapfrogged my UIUC scholly by 1k/year, but I think that had more to do with my stats than the UIUC scholly.ktg808 wrote:Has anyone had any luck with getting WUSTL to match UIUC's scholly??

Re: WUSTL 2011 Cycle
I've just had no luck with any schools in terms of matching scholarships. I've tried a lot of leveraging using better or similar offers from peer schools and had no luck with BU, WUSTL, GW, and UMN. I think I'm either bad at this or schools don't want to shell out for splitters.

I really want to sing "I Hope I Get It" from "A Chorus Line" right now... hopefully it will go to one of us wait listed. They did say they over-extended offers already though.

Re: WUSTL 2011 Cycle
WUSTL is definitely a better choice employment-wise than UIUC, unless your primary goal is to head to Chicago after graduation...in which case it's a wash. If you're being offered even money, go with WUSTL. If UIUC offered me $10K more in scholly money per year, it might be a harder choice.MyManKanye wrote:Ugh, im still stuck between UIUC and Wash U. I'm well settled into Champaign and it would be cheaper for me, but I think Wash U is the better overall school. Why couldn't they just throw me another few thousand and make it easy?
WUSTL definitely has a better reputation, and I think that's going to translate into significantly better job prospects when we come out of this legal recession. WUSTL's rise in reputation has coincided with law firms not hiring anyone from anywhere, which has contributed to some slack in the job prospects catching up. But if you simply look at the US News reputation scores, WUSTL looks a lot more like a T18 than does Illinois. I find it hard to believe that by the time you guys do OCI, that's not going to make a difference.

I think you're right, which is my problem. WUSTL is a better school, but UIUC is cheaper and is familiar. I suppose I couldn't really go wrong, I just wanted the choice to be more black and white.JCougar wrote: WUSTL is definitely a better choice employment-wise than UIUC, unless your primary goal is to head to Chicago after graduation...in which case it's a wash. Re: WUSTL 2011 Cycle
I realize this is on the Wash U thread, but I am curious.
If one would have to choose -- if both offered the same amount of $ or both offered no financial help -- and wanted to work in Chicago but was open to the Midwest in general (but mainly wanted to end up back in CHI: Would Notre Dame or Wash U be the wiser selection for the choice of a law school? Thanks

Same amount of money, I would pick WUSTL since the hiring isn't that different but the weather and city definitely are.Philosopher1 wrote:I realize this is on the Wash U thread, but I am curious.

Re: WUSTL 2011 Cycle
What about the argument that, if the schools are indeed considered peer schools (and perhaps they are not), Notre Dame has "the name," period. The majority of attorneys and business people I spoke with couldn't emphasize enough how having Notre Dame attached is quite the advantage in society, and they've experienced or witnessed such in one way or another. Just a thought. Both schools are stunningly good, regardless.Hannibal wrote:Same amount of money, I would pick WUSTL since the hiring isn't that different but the weather and city definitely are.Philosopher1 wrote:I realize this is on the Wash U thread, but I am curious.

Yeah I think WUSTL has an edge in actual quality recognition, Notre Dame has an edge in lay prestige. I think they kind of even themselves out unless you want to tell random people you went to law school at Notre Dame and have them drop their jaws.

Well just got off my NW hold and, not going to lie, I love Chicago. At sticker this is going to be a tough choice, if I get any money I think I'll be withdrawing...i do really like WUSTL though ( and all the splitters)

NW is definitely a good school and if you want to work in Chicago its a great choice. I'd be too debt averse to take NU at sticker with the goal of working in Chicago, but like you said if they throw you any money its a great choice. Congrats.

And just got a email saying all money is gone from NW. Anyone wanna try and talk me into not taking on 200k of debt (or into giving up my WUSTL seat)?

My thinking is you can go NW and be biglaw or bust, or go to WUSTL and gun like crazy while settling for a job somewhere in the MW that might not be prestigious if you don't do really well, but will be able to pay off your significantly smaller debt.

WUSTL will a)limit your options to more regionally, though it does have some name recognition nationally b)free you up more financially to be out of debt earlier and have a family and get a mortgage and maybe be less stressed about finances c)You can get a job after that pays only $60-75k and live comfortably
NW: a) give your JD some national portability b)limit your options to getting BigLaw or going LRAP or paying your loan off over 25 years which takes forever and costs you a shit load in interest

These seem like accurate breakdowns. I have a lot to think about. Thanks.

Re: WUSTL 2011 Cycle
I think your (c) is what I was implying in (a). But yes, better job prospects in more markets. However, you have a 50/50 chance of being below median. So you have to measure your confidence in yourself to perform (even though at this stage everyone is planning to be in the top 1/3rd of their class) and your willingness to gamble that you can perform like that and get a job.FiveSermon wrote:Flips88 wrote:WUSTL will a)limit your options to more regionally, though it does have some name recognition nationally b)free you up more financially to be out of debt earlier and have a family and get a mortgage and maybe be less stressed about finances c)You can get a job after that pays only $60-75k and live comfortably
