I got $15,000 a year from William and Mary OOS and $31,000 a year from W&L. They are not too far apart in terms of ranking. Should I try and negotiate with W&M?

Again, I think the answer would be that it is worth the effort, as long as you go about it in a responsible manner. I don't know the differences in tuition off hand, but assuming your offer from W&L saves you a good chunk of change, I think you could make a very legitimate case based off the concern for how increased post-graduate debt will adversely affect you.

Worst they can say is no.

Is that 15K graduate fellowship? If so, there will be a decent amount of work to do for it, while at W&L it is probably just a no obligation schollie.
Negotiating with W&M on financial aid will typically lead you into a brickwall deadend (most people with top numbers were able to squeeze out 2-4K a year at most, 4K when there was a full schollie from a peer school), but one can always try.

Not sure...have to look at the letter again.

Do they do anything like offering In state tuition for an OOS?

That's what my fellowship at WM gives me.

Yea...I need to clarify that. Because that would seal the deal for me most likely.

You know, the fellowship is extra work, but its only like 8-10hrs/week and after the first semester you are doing things that will be good experience and add at least something to your resume, plus its an automatic networking opportunity.
Maybe I'm just optomistic because I love WM so much, but I think the fellowship is worth much more than just the financial benefit.

I thought someone ITT got a $10K increase this cycle.

Posted earlier today about finding out via status checker that I was accepted...

Packet was in my box today:

Graduate Fellowship: $13k per year (need to stay an out of state resident)
Fellowship Stipend: $4k per year (work 8ish hours a week in the law library/law school administration)
Merit Scholarship: $10k per year

I'm extremely happy....$23k per year off my tuition, bringing it down to $10k per year...plus the extra 4k stipend (taxable of course)

I have been dead set on UGA or UFL (I live in Florida) but I also love W&M and the thought of paying only 10k per year for law scohol is very enticing...

Ugh....

I'm dying to know already. Accept me! Reject me! Let me know!

I want to go to W&M so badly.

That is all.

Just joining this thread-
Admitted this morning via status check!
This really changes things for me. Is everyone finding out about money in the admitted packet?

Wait... I received the very same offer, but I thought that the $4k stipend was part of the $13k.

It says in the 3rd parag. of the offer that "The Graduate Fellowship total value will be $13,000", suggesting that the stipend is part of the deal.

Can anyone clear this up?

Edit: Just checked an earlier post in this thread, and indeed, someone called W&M to clear this up. The $13k consists of $9k to cover in-state tuition, and then $4k worth of stipend.

That breakdown of $9k+$4k is consistent with my understanding, but that $13k is strictly the monetary value of the fellowship, which WM does not consider to be a scholarship. Many applicants have been offered additional scholarship money in addition to this.

Capitol A has TCR.

So the additional scholarship would make the total 23K. Not 27K.

for the graduate fellowship, the 9k is designed to offset the OOS tuition cost and the taxable 4k is what you earn when you work with administration. outside of that, you can receive merit scholarship. i called dean shealy just to double check. if you have any questions about your scholly, feel free to call dean shealy. she is so nice. :)
