I just got the Chancellors' email (the real one). I am so excited, does this mean if I attend the event and interview I am guaranteed at least 75% tuition? If this is the case, my cycle is over.

That would be so awesome Supra! I am hoping for any kind of money from them since I am OOS. Definitely not getting the Chancellor's scholly.

I read mine 1,000 times over and yes, that's what it's saying. :D
I believe my cycle is over, too. :D
Congrats to both of you! Becca, mind sharing your numbers via PM?

When in doubt, check LSN using the exact same sn as TLS, works a huge percentage of the time...

On that note, congratulations guys! hopefully UNC can now begin to look at my application lol

Congrats to the scholarship folks! Question for you: did you get one of the phone calls from a faculty member? I'm just looking for any kind of correlation here. (read: glimmer of hope).

I got an e-mail from a faculty member, no phone call. Becca did you e-mail Dean States back, indicating your travel plans to him and everything?

I got an email from a faculty member asking when would be a good time for her to call me, so.. both?

I got my Chancellor's email a week ago, and I emailed him at the time to tell him that I'm coming in from out of town and need a hotel room. The schedule email from tonight is the first I've heard from them since then. I'll email again tomorrow to tell them that I'm going to the lunch on Friday. Aaah, I'm so nervous about the interview. D:
I am incredibly nervous. If we really already have 75% tuition though, that definetly takes alot of the edge off.

I got an email from a professor asking me to call her too, but no Chancellor's scholarship email. :(

Got that email a little over 3 weeks ago, wonder if there is still a chance I could get the scholly interview email.

It's possible, but if you are getting one it should come today or tomorrow because the last day to book the hotel (if you are from out of state) is the 18th. So I would assume they give everyone a little notice. Also guys, I need help:

If the first day of the weekend is lunch with the dean and faculty and then school tours and the second day is interviews and then a dinner later on with alum. Should I wear a suit both days or business casual the first day and suit second day? I know this may be a dumb question, but I just want to be dressed right for the occasion.

Well I live in Chapel Hill so maybe they are just making me wait.

Has anyone received a email from a professor and not the Chancellor's email? And has anyone received the Chancellor's email but no prof email?

Also, I would maybe wear a suit both days. I dunno, it's tough so I would caution on the side of too dressed up vs. not enough.

I would go suit and tie for both and lose the tie for dinner the second day.

I didn't get an email, but a professor called me. I'm almost wondering if it was sort of to gauge interest and weed some of us out based on that conversation. I haven't heard anything about the chancellor's scholarship. I'm kind of confused haha

PDL wrote:Just wondering, but why don't they make the facebook group earlier? From my experiences in Chapel Hill, housing fills up pretty quickly. Why not make it now, and let all who are definitely attending UNC join?

Or do you wait until people actually commit to the school and then invite them?
I think the point is to wait until people are definitely committed to the school and keep the group private to them. The facebook group is used by 1Ls throughout the year, so this way people aren't in the group who don't actually go to UNC. I did hear that a new admitted students' page is going live soon which will have an interactive page where you can post questions on specific subjects and have law students answer them. So if you can wait a bit, I think that'll be a great place for housing questions!

I'm very confused now. I don't know what could have come through with my conversation that would point to UNC not topping my list. The professor has even emailed me a couple more times since then following up on things we talked about (clinics, faculty profiles in my interests) so who knows. Pretty bummed if I don't get one.

Some general housing thoughts from a current UNC grad student...

The area has a diverse range of options depending on your current situation. If you've just left undergrad, there are numerous opportunities for furnished apartments (mostly along the 15-501 bypass and/or on MLK Blvd north of downtown). There are also several "law school" houses that turn over from year to year.

By far the most important thing to consider in your housing decision is location, location, location both for school purposes and social purposes. When I came to UNC for grad school in 2009, I wound up in a craigslist apartment that was far away from both campus and any convenient bus route. This is key, as buses in Chapel Hill are free and run late along main routes. It made my work schedule and my social life much more constrained.

With that in mind, the closer to campus you can get, the better (duh). I'd also recommend Glen Lennox, East 54 (if you can afford it!) and/or Meadowmont as places further out that are still convenient to the law school (which is on the very east side of campus). All three are convenient to transit and located close to grocery stores/restaurants/etc so you're not too isolated. Carrboro is also highly recommended (I live there now and am much happier than I was last year), especially if you trend towards the hippie/hipster side of the social spectrum. In terms of the social scene, a good general rule is that the further west on Franklin St. you go, the more the crowd shifts from drunk/underage frat-sorority crowd to drunk/overage grad student crowd. There are exceptions of course but it's a good rule of thumb if you want your walk home at 2 am to be short and sweet.

Getting to campus during the day is fairly easy as long as you don't intend to drive. As previously mentioned, transit is fare-free and the town is conducive to biking and walking (though they don't call it Chapel Hill for nothing).

0L here but went to UNC undergrad, lived in area for last 3 years so I can answer any questions about housing too.

Couple things to add... I lived down MLK one year, in Carrboro the next, and now across from Meadowmont in a neighborhood called Finley Forest. So I've kind of hit all the places the above poster mentioned. Fine info by the way.

If you aren't close enough to walk/bike but live farther than the main bus routes, you can still avoid some hassle. Down 54 towards Meadowmont is the Friday Center which has a big park and ride lot. So you can get a parking pass, park there, and take the bus right to the law building, kind of a hybrid option.

Also there are "safe rides" that run til 2am along some of the routes so you wouldnt be totally stranded, just have to plan things out.

My roommate is a 2L and prefers the close proximity to the Friday Center over where we were in Carrboro last year but to each his own. Any other questions about housing I can try and help too.

Sorry to change the topic, folks, but my app is still "complete, ready for review", and it's driving me nuts. Should I take this as a good/bad sign or neither.

BTW, congrats to those of you who have been accepted I'm green with envy. Hopefully, I'll have the privilege to join some of you great people on the Hill.

Wow. I've been complete since mid-December. C'mon, UNC, please admit me...please. :D

I'm taking my frustrations with not hearing a decision out on the basketball team. Did anyone see the game last night? I think Roy gave McDonald, Bullock, Barnes, and Strickland the green light to take some practice shots against Wake. That's all fine and good, but we need one of these guys to find his shot before Selection Sunday (and, ideally before the Duke rematch on the 5th).

I'm with you - still waiting to be 'In Review' and still very much hoping for an acceptance.

I don't think it should be taken as a good or a bad sign for our admission chances. I bet they've started by reviewing applications with especially high scores or other stand-out attributes. For the rest of us, it'll just take a bit of time to get into the formal review process. As frustrating as it is, at least they're actually taking the time to read applications thoroughly. All that said, I hope the wheels start rolling in the next week or two.
