If your numbers are weak, a hold is better than a ding, I guess.

True dat. :-)

As opposed to people with strong numbers, of course.

Hi,
First time writing here.

I got U/R on last Friday, and just got a JR1 email.
I see from other posts that the standard interview questions are 'what are your interests?' and 'why HLS?'

The first question seems awfully broad to me. what do you think JR expects for an answer to that question?

Thanks guys!

I wasn't asked that specific question, but I would expect that reasonable answers would be either particular types of legal practice (real estate, litigation, IP, etc) or particular problems or topic of research interest. I was asked a variant--"what would you do with a law degree"--and I described my broad preference for a particular type of work environment (government vs private firm vs academia vs etc) and why that was a departure from the various legal fields I have previously worked in.

I'm not sure the content of my responses was especially "WOW" or interesting, but I feel good about my call because I think my answers were well-organized and delivered with poise.

I got a similar question to the above, something along the lines of "Where do you see a law degree taking you?"--which is a little different than "Why do you want to go to law school?" (the question I was expecting). I don't think you need to have a brilliant answer, just something that proves you've at least thought about why you want to be a lawyer and what areas of the law interest you.

It seems like whatever your answer is to the latter, it could also be the same for the former. No matter how it's phrased, basically JR just wants to know that you've actually thought about the outcome and not just, "It seems like a good place to go because I don't want to get a job yet." I'm sure that answer occasionally slips out — "I'd rather stay a student because I don't want to be an adult yet" — and that's exactly what he's looking to catch.

But so many people who claim to have had terrible JR1's get JR2's that it's a little hard to tell.

So in my LOCI - which I have already sent in - I just realized I have the delightful pidgin prose "Do not hesitate contact me if you require further information or explanation." How out am I? ....

That's such a stock sentence, you've got fair chances the reader just barely glances at it and assumes it is written correctly. Keep your head up for now.

Yup. Took me reading it like three times to even see it.

Is anyone else freaking out about JR1? What type of questions do people ask him, would it be about admissions, the school, etc?

Whether I'll get one? Sure. What would happen during the conversation? Absolutely not.

Edit: Actually freaking out is far too strong a term. "Unhealthily curious" about whether I'll get one is more accurate. :D

Really, I wouldn't freak out--I hardly think the type of question(s) you ask will determine whether or not you get in. It might be a good idea to seek out a HLS alum, if you have any way of contacting one. I work at a law firm and my parents are lawyers, so this was easier for me than most, but I was able to find a fairly recently graduated alum. I chatted with him a couple days before my JR1 about his impressions of the school. Then, during the call, I mentioned something the alum had said about the school that I thought was interesting, and asked JR if he thought it was true, or if the school was heading in a different direction.

This may not be helpful to most people, but I found talking to an alum to be an easy route to go, to avoid asking the same questions anyone can answer by reading the viewbook/blog. You might also want to ask a question about your specific area of interest in the law field, if you have one.

I wouldn't ask anything about admissions--he mentions at the end of the call when you can expect to hear back, and I think at this point any other information isn't really helpful. You've already sent in your application, after all!

Take the above with a grain of salt, as I've yet to get a JR2.
