Re: Berkeley 2011 applicants

The additional review process at berk is not a faculty review but a peer review. If you get peer reviewed it's a good sign. But it doesn't necessarily mean you will get in.

That isn't entirely true. Via Berkeley admissions website:CastleRock wrote:The additional review process at berk is not a faculty review but a peer review. If you get peer reviewed it's a good sign. But it doesn't necessarily mean you will get in.
I hope so, but unfortunately my softs are rather weak. Oh well, Berkeley is an amazing school and I would be happy to go there, and stay in CA!lakerfanimal wrote:Hahaha pretty much.Knock wrote:

Thanks, I feel like you'll get into Stanford because it seems like you got baller softs
And Castle, I'm just curious, how'd you find that out?
Because ive been around this site since the creation of time. (plus, when you do berkeleys app, it asks you to sign off that you are ok with peers looking at your app, it's for peer review)lakerfanimal wrote:Hahaha pretty much.Knock wrote:

It's not like I said something that wasn't true. But there is the whole truth. Thanks for clearing it up hipster.hipstermafia wrote:That isn't entirely true. Evaluation
Administrative Review
Once each file is complete, it is evaluated on the basis of the admissions criteria. The dean of admissions admits a certain number of applicants who, under the governing criteria and on the basis of his experience, would have a high likelihood of admission if referred to the Admissions Committee. Similarly, applicants who would have a high likelihood of being denied if referred to the committee are denied by the dean of admissions.
Committee Review
The remaining applicants are given more extended consideration by the Admissions Committee, which is composed of faculty and students.
The student role is consultative; the faculty members' decisions are final. Only students who are members of the Admissions Committee are permitted to read files. You may indicate on the application form whether or you consent to have your file read by a student member of the committee. In the evaluation of your application, no weight is given to whether you have consented to student review. In every case, complete confidentiality of all materials is maintained.
As a result of the committee's consideration, some applicants are admitted, some are placed on a waiting list, and the remaining applicants are denied. The total number admitted is that which experience has indicated will fill the places available in the entering class. If the number of admitted students who accept an offer of admission falls below the number necessary to fill the class, a waiting list is used to fill the remaining places.

I didn't get that, but I am also only about a 3 hour drive from Berkeley. I also spoke to an assistant Dean and not Dean Tom.tipler4213 wrote:I spoke with Dean Tom for mine. As stated earlier, he said they were trying to secure people they wanted now and brighten our Thanksgiving. Didn't give any mention to timetables regarding applying, but seemed to imply this is the non faculty/student review batch. He said we would get our packets and an e-mail within three weeks.
He also said they were going to fly me out in April for admitted students in April and pay airfare, etc.? Did other people get offered this?

Dean Tom mentioned that they'd pay to fly me out for ASW, which is amazing. That said, I spoke to my boss (who is like a mentor to me) and we pretty much agreed that I should withdraw from Berkeley in the next few weeks since I'm pretty sure that I would attend Harvard over Berkeley. Nothing against Berkeley - a Harvard law degree would qualify me to take the bar exam in my home country, a JD from Berkeley wouldn't. I guess it wouldn't be fair to others who want the place at Berkeley and would find attending Berkeley's ASW really informative?
I may be biased since I want your spot at Berkeley But that's really astute of you to see it that way. That's interesting that a JD from Berkeley wouldn't allow you to take the bar in your country, but I guess it makes your decision easier too.cscx wrote:haha yeah, pretty much!lakerfanimal wrote:Wow congrats, you've had the best 2 days ever huh hahacscx wrote:got the call about 45 minutes ago!!! =D
