+1

esp after life in NYC since birth, a lower COL would be just wonderful

I pay just over 700/mo. for a clean, safe apartment in a very convenient location, and included in that are gas, electricity, water, and parking in a garage.

The building I live in is more asian than white, and anywhere near Carnegie Mellon is the same thing... and it's literally just down the street from Pitt.

There are a lot of Asians in the East End, many of them college students. But the city is 3.5% Asian overall, and most of them are concentrated within a couple neighborhoods. That being said, Bedsole is right. Around Pitt and CMU, there are Asians everywhere. Most of Pittsburgh's Asian community lives in Squirrel Hill, a predominantly Jewish neighborhood.

Which is awesome if you have yellow fever. I met a nice Chinese girl not long after I moved to Pittsburgh, and we're still dating.

You drive to school? How is the public transportation system?

I rarely drive anywhere. I take the bus whenever I can, which is pretty much all the time. I usually only drive when I am going to Waterfront or during off hours when parking is more available. The bus system is pretty good, although some parts of town don't get the frequent service that others get. I can hop one of 3-4 buses to school in the morning, and there's a grocery store across the street. School is a 10-15 minute bus ride away, and if I take a bus on the busway (right behind my apartment) downtown if about 15 minutes. If I take a regular street bus, it's more like 30.

It's not usually ever worth getting a jd/mba unless you plan to get a job that specifically would require you to have the combo.

While that is probably good advice in most situations, an MBA from Tepper is pretty awesome. The CMU name carries a lot of weight around here and to have it on a resume will look a lot more impressive than the average pitt law resume.

I don't think a Katz MBA would be worth the time or money, but Tepper adds something special.

I live on the other side of the city and I ride the bus every day. I'm fine with it but a 45 minute bus ride to get somewhere a 10 minute drive from campus is not for everyone.

Also, public transportation funding in Pennsylvania is horrible. I was amazed at how they fund, or rather don't fund, public transit. The Port Authority has cut service or raised rates three times since I got here last summer. That said, it's not something you'll need to worry about too much because if you're in the neighborhoods we've all talked about then you'll definitely have access to quite a bit of public transit or you can easily walk to school.

+1. I don't usually walk, but I can. In fact, I did today.

Having a car is not absolutely necessary, but if you enjoy mountain biking, hiking, golfing, and other exurban activities (which Pittsburgh has tons of), a car is a nice luxury.

Pitt is having internet trouble today, so don't stress too much. I had to sit in Civ Pro and pray I didn't get cold called because I couldn't update my OneNote, so I had no notes at all from my reading for last night. If going another day without a decision makes you as stressed as that should, then you should get a prescription.
